Obituary

Zelotes Millard Balkcom, 90, of Panama City, passed away Saturday, November 5, 2016. Affectionately known by nicknames of "Junior",  "Balkcom", "Mr. B", or "Zeke", he was born February 15, 1926 to Zelotes and Gladys Bell Balkcom in Noma, FL. Millard graduated from Holmes County High School, was drafted at age 18 into the 3rd Army serving under General Patton, who chose him to lead the platoon. During his 2 year service in World War II he received two Purple Hearts.  After leaving the service, he moved to Panama City to work at the shipyard. He then retired after 30 years of service at the Naval Coastal Systems Center as Procurement Officer. After retirement, his passion for gardening blossomed into a full time hobby of supplying the neighborhood, community, and family with produce.  Millard was preceded in death by his parents Zelotes and Gladys Balkcom, brother, Howard Balkcom (Wynell), half-brother Tommy Balkcom, and half-sisters Agnes Balkcom Ard (Taft) and Mildred Balkcom George (Millard). Survivors include his wife of 70 years, Dorothy (Dot) Balkcom, their daughter Carmel Dodson (Bill) of Port St. Joe; brother, Archie "Jerry" Balkcom (Angie) of Bonifay, FL; sister, Dorothy "Dot" Budd of Georgetown, SC along with grandsons Micah Dodson of Tallahassee, FL and Matthew Dodson of St. Petersburg, FL; and numerous nieces and nephews. Celebration of Life service will begin at 2 p.m. Tuesday, November 8, 2016 at Wilson Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Morris Denman officiating.  The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 1-2 p.m. prior to the service.  Interment will follow in the Evergreen Memorial Gardens with military honors conducted at the graveside. In lieu of flowers, the family asks friends to consider making a donation in Milliards name to Covenant Hospice Care Center, 107 W. 19 th St., Panama City, FL 32405 or to the St. Andrew Baptist Church Center of Hope, 3010 W. 15 th St., Panama City, FL 32405.
