DR. WILLIAM EUGENE WELLS, SR.
Dr. William Eugene Wells, Sr., who was born on April 30, 1923 in Biloxi, Mississippi, passed away on Friday, May 1, 2009 in his home. He laid down his cross and went to his eternal reward. He was preceded in death by his two sons, William Eugene Wells, Jr. and wife Carol Wells and David Stephen Wells. He served in the U. S. Navy during WWII and the Korean War, and received numerous medals. Dr. Wells was a graduate of Bay High School, was a charter student of Gulf Coast Community College, and received a Doctorate, PHD, in Religious Education from Covington Theological Seminary. Dr. Wells was a licensed Radio Broadcast Engineer, a licensed Ham Radio Operator, with call letters W4IFY. He had a radio program, "The Message of the Cross", did missionary work in Jamaica and was a full time Evangelist, Pastor, Teacher and authored numerous books. He was instrumental in starting the Callaway Assembly of God and the Eastside Assembly of God. He was in active ministry for at least 54 years. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Carolyn Simpson Wells; brother, Rev. James Wells and wife Valerie; three daughters, Carol Ann Hughes, Gladys Louise Freeman, Rosalind Wyvetta Griffin; five grandchildren, Joseph [Joe] Hughes, Michael Freeman, William Scott Wells, Michelle Freeman, Melissa Griffin; three great grandchildren, Joey Hughes, Isabella Wells, Amelia Hughes and numerous nephews, nieces and cousins. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday at 2 p.m. in the Wilson Funeral Home Chapel, officiated by a personal friend, Rev. Hilton Foster, nephew Rev. Jack Wells and Rev. Bob Claycomb. Interment will follow at Evergreen Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday from 1 – 2 p.m. prior to the service.
