1937-2020
He was born March 19, 1937, in Dothan, Alabama, and died March 12, 2020. He attended public schools in Dothan, graduating from Dothan High School in 1955. After serving 4 years in the Navy, he attended Gulf Coast Junior College (its name at the time), where he graduated with honors and served as president of the Student Government Association and the Veterans Club. He was the first student from Gulf Coast College to attend the University of Alabama, where he graduated with honors in 1963 with a degree in Civil Engineering. He worked for Florida Asphalt Paving Company until 1982, when he became a partner in the Company. He continued working in the construction business until he retired in 2002, and then he worked part time for ATKINS Consulting Engineers/Planners, as a Manager of Special Projects.
He was active in his church, St. Andrew Baptist, serving on various committees and as a Sunday school teacher, Treasurer, and usher. In addition, he was active in community affairs and professional organizations, having served as coach in the Lynn Haven Raider football programs and Little League baseball program. He was a past-president of the Mosley HS Booster Organization, Panama City Lions Club, Asphalt Contractors Association of Florida, Director of Florida Transportation Builders Association, president of the University of Alabama Alumni Association Bay County Chapter, and a member of the Board for the Bay County Planning Commission, Citizens Advisory Commission for the MPO, and Bay County Parks and Recreation Board. Tom loved hunting (especially when his son accompanied him) and fishing, as well as managing Vickers Farm in Washington County.
He is survived by his wife 0f 61 years, Imogene Helms Vickers, two children, Patricia Curtis and husband Ryder, and Jim Vickers and wife Suzanne. Also surviving are grandchildren, Timothy Harper, Kami Harper, Anthony Lee, Jessica Lee, James Vickers and Bradley Vickers as well as 4 great grandchildren. He is predeceased by 4 sisters and their husbands; Mary Cecil and Hal Sherwood, Lillian and L.W. Stafford, Jewel Marie and Charles Eubanks, Julia Hagler and Jack. He is also survived by his "other family" and special friends, Dr. James and Sue Campbell, Jim and Sandra Preston, and Milton and Margaret Fulton.
Asked to serve as pallbearers are: J.R. Moody III, Graham Jones, Lee Kinard, Stan Timmons, Ed Higdon, Bill Moody, Charles Buckles, Steve Cox and Ken Faint. Honorary pallbearers will be past employees of Florida Asphalt Paving Company and members of the Chapel Sunday School Class of St. Andrew Baptist Church. Funeral services will be at St. Andrew Baptist Church at 2 p.m. on Sunday, March 15, 2020. The family will receive friends at the church from 1 to 2 p.m., one hour prior to service time. Burial will follow in the Evergreen Cemetery with Dr. Michael Claunch officiating.
