WANDA GERALDINE MAITLAND
1913-2009

Wanda Geraldine Maitland, age 96, passed away at her home on Saturday, July 11, 2009.
Wanda was born June 28, 1913 and raised in Chicago, Illinois and attended Northwest University for two years, where she majored in French, Polish, and the Slavic languages. Due to the depression of the 1930's, Wanda had to leave the university and was hired as a secretary in Chicago City Government. She left Chicago in 1938 going to Washington, D.C. where she was hired as secretary to Will Clayton, the Under Secretary of Commerce. In 1943, she volunteered to join the International Red Cross serving overseas with military forces at Atkinson Field, British Guiana. In April of 1946, she married First Lt. William W. Maitland in Washington, D.C, whom she met while stationed in British Guiana.

She created homes for her family throughout the states and Europe during her husband's military career of thirty years. She was also very active in the Officer's Wives Club, serving as its president, secretary/Treasurer, and Parliamentarian. Returning to Panama City, Florida in 1972, she was very active in support of the Panama City Library, serving as president of The Friends of the Library.
Wanda loved to read, solve crossword puzzles and playing bridge.

Wanda is survived by her husband of 63 years, Colonel William W. Maitland USAF (Ret), two daughters, Lacey Casagrande of Las Vegas, NV, and Brandy Maitland of Panama City, Fla. She is also survived by two grandchildren, Robert W.A. Casagrande and Dawn Casagrande of Las Vegas, NV, two great grandchildren, Angelique Casagrande and Paige Ryan Casagrande of Las Vegas, NV. Other survivors include: brother-in law, Martin Conroy of Chicago, ILL., nieces Donna Almeida and husband Mark and son Andrew of Oakland, CA., Cindy Conroy of Boston, MA, Linda Johnson of Detroit MI., and Susan Wyman of Longwood Fla., nephews; Martin Conroy of Dubuque, MN, and Michael Glenn and wife Glenda of Grand Rapids, MI and her grandnieces and grandnephews Michael, Lindsey, Grey and Annie Glenn of Grand Rapids, MI. Wanda also left behind special friends who shared their "Saturday Night" for many years, Wilma Dresser, Hank and Betty Middleton, David and Holly Levitt, Jean and Bobby Jackson all of Panama City and a another dear friend of the family for many years, John Williams and his daughter LeeAnn of Panama City.

The family will receive friends at Wilson Funeral Home from 5-7 p.m. on Wednesday. A funeral mass will be held at Saint Dominic's Catholic Church on Thursday at 10 a.m. Interment will be Friday at 12:30 p.m. in the Barrancas National Cemetery, Pensacola, Florida. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that a donation be made to both or either The Alzheimer's Association, 225 N.
