Obituary

Walter C. Sherman II, 85, of Panama City, FL, went home to Glory, surrounded by family, on Saturday, November 3, 2018. He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Wanda Norris Sherman. He was born in Colquitt, Georgia on June 1, 1933, to the late Thomas Jefferson Sherman II and Carolyn Josephine (Barrett) Sherman II. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Carolyn Jo (Sherman) Larson, and his brother, Thomas Jefferson III. Walter was the grandson and namesake of Walter Colquitt Sherman, a pioneer developer of Bay County. He was a lifelong resident of Panama City and a graduate of Bay High School where he was a star athlete, playing basketball, football, and tennis. Walter attended college at Bob Jones University and graduated from the University of Florida with a B.S. degree. He was a big fan of the Florida Gators throughout his life. Walter worked as co-owner, manager, and President of Sherman and Sons Shipyard. Other business ventures include a Christian radio station, a marina, and owner of the Baldwin Piano and Organ Dealership as Sherman Music. He grew up loving the water, sailing in regattas, boating, scuba-diving, swimming, skiing, and spear-fishing. He taught swimming lessons and served as a life guard at Bob Jones University. In the community, Walter has served as secretary and treasurer for many years in the Genealogy Society of Bay County. He was also a long-time member of the Sons of the American Revolution, serving as secretary-treasurer, president, and most recently as secretary and chaplain. Walter served his country in the Florida National Guard for 25 years becoming Chief Master Sergeant and Warrant Officer. He has received numerous medals and commendations. A leader of men and a noble man of honor, Walter is remembered for his good character, faithfulness, and genuineness. He loved the Lord with all his heart. He was one of the founding members of Central Baptist Church and attended faithfully, serving as Sunday School teacher, choir member, usher, and deacon. Walter was dedicated to reading his Bible every morning. He read the entire Bible through multiple times. Next to God, Walter loved his family dearly. Family meant the world to him, and he enjoyed many happy gatherings with all of his children and their families. He felt truly blessed of God to have been given a large, wonderful family. He was proud of each one of them. His grandchildren were the joy of his life. He was a man dearly loved by his family, the greatest treasure of all. God blessed him abundantly with true wealth. Walter is survived by his wife, Wanda and their four children: Carol Sherman, Jeanie Loutzenhiser (Bodie), Rachel Hicks (Jared), and David Sherman. They have six grandchildren: Brandon Walker, Katelyn Hicks, Dane, Troy, Clay Loutzenhiser, Sydney Slay; and sister-in-law, Gwen Sherman. A celebration of life service will be held Tuesday, November 13, in the Wilson Funeral Home Chapel, with Dr. Bruce Barton officiating. The family will receive friends from 10-11 am prior to the service. Interment will follow at the Greenwood Cemetery with military rites. Pallbearers will be the deacons of Central Baptist Church. "I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith; Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness…" II Timothy 4:7-8
