Captain Virgil Balus Anderson
Captain Virgil Balus Anderson, 94, passed away Monday, April 2, this year of our Lord, 2007. He was preceded in death by his parents Captain Charles Stephen Anderson and Sarah Elizabeth Gainer Anderson, three brothers, Captains Max, Walter and Lambert Anderson, and two sisters, Tillie Anderson Heath, and Ella Anderson Barnes.
He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Mary Lowrey Anderson, five children, Sarah Anderson Mason (John Mason), Carl Stephen Anderson (Jana), Jerry Collier Anderson (Ann) and John David Anderson (Betsy), Tillie Anderson Fowler (Darwin), 15 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. The family would like to thank his special friend and caregiver, Lisa Striplin.
Captain Virgil, a former member of the U.S. Marine Corps, followed his father and grandfather in all areas of the fishing industry, including seine and gill netting, commercial red snapper and grouper fishing, and recreational party boat fishing. After retirement he was an avid golfer, often shooting his age until he quit playing golf at age 84. He was a member of the LLL Sunday School Class at First Baptist Church for many years until his health precluded his participation.
His funeral will be held at First Baptist Church, Thursday April 5, at 10 AM. Pallbearers will be Lowell Lowe, Mike Anderson, Ken Anderson, and his grandsons, Chris Cockrill, Ryan Oliver, and Alex Anderson. Honorary pallbearers include the members of the LLL Sunday School Class as well as Ellis Fowhand, and Carl Oman.
Burial will follow immediately at Evergreen Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends at Wilson Funeral Home Wednesday evening from 6-8 PM. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the First Baptist Church "Run the Race" building fund, P.O. Box 1200, Panama City, FL 32402.
