Toby Ann Vann/Joyce, of Lynn Haven, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, December 19, 2023. Toby was born February 26, 1936 to John Henry & Evelyn Vann in St. Andrews, Florida.
Toby attended St. Andrews Elementary School, Jenks Junior High School and graduated from Bay High School in 1955. As President of the Devotional Club, she gave the Daily Devotion to her Senior Class. During her senior year, she joined three of the male singers in a gospel quartet known as "3 Hits and a Miss".
Toby grew up in St. Andrew United Methodist Church, where she was active in all youth activities and the church choir. She was a part of Panama City Youth For Christ Group.
Toby started her 13 year banking career in Victoria, Texas. She was employed as a teller in the Old Commercial Bank on Harrison Avenue. Toby moved to Tallahassee in 1959 where she met Jerry Joyce. Toby worked at the Tallahassee Bank and Trust where she trained the tellers. They were married in 1964 and moved to the Tampa Bay area. They spent 30 years on the Isle of Capri on Treasure Island (The gulf end of St. Petersburg).
Toby and Jerry's years together were happy and fulfilling. On January 1, 1979, Toby and Jerry became grandparents. In March, 1979, Jerry ran his first Boston marathon and in May 1979, Toby graduated from college. Toby followed God's directions to a degree in Physical Therapy. She graduated with Honors and won the State award for the most outstanding student in the State in her field.
Toby chose to work with handicapped children (ages 2-21). She spent many happy years with the students at Nina Harris Special Education School in St. Petersburg, FL.
Toby loved Treasure Island and the wonderful people who lived there. She was President of the Treasure Islettes, worked many hours with City Youth Director and was the first female to be appointed a member of the Board of Adjustment and Appeals by the Mayor and Commissioners.
Toby and Jerry were longtime members of Pasadena Community Church where Jerry served on the board and ushered. Toby was head of the Greeters and Communion Steward.
Jerry was diagnosed with cancer in 1991. He and Toby spent the next 2 years in Houston, Texas at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center. Jerry went to be with the Lord in September 1993. Toby moved to Maderia Beach and joined bible study fellowship and God became her best friend. Toby became a children's leader and for the next ten years Toby taught the bible to 3 and 4 year olds.
In 2003, Toby's great granddaughter came to live with her. In 2005, Toby and Alicia moved from Madeira Beach to Panama City. In 2007, Toby adopted Alicia who changed her name to Rebecca. Toby built a big home for them in Lynn Haven. They became members of Hiland Park Baptist Church in February 2015. Toby was an active member of the Sunshine Sunday School Class and continued to be a part of Bible Study Fellowship.
In addition to Rebecca, Toby has a daughter, JoAnn who lives with her husband, Rick in Brooksville, FL. The sunshine of her life is John Henry, her 6 year old great great grandson. Toby praises God for the past years she has had with John Henry in her home.
Toby is survived by two sisters, Peggy Pons, Ruth Howard, three nieces and two nephews all of Panama City, She was preceded in death by a brother, Josh Vann.
Memorial services will be held on Saturday, January 20, 2024 at 1 p.m. in the Wilson Funeral Home Chapel. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Saturday from 12 noon-1 p.m. prior to the service.
