Obituary

Major Terrance (Terry) Boyd Wyatt (USAF Ret.) passed away October 2, 2022.  Born June 16, 1935 to the late John Ogden and Senate S. Wyatt.  Raised in Birmingham, Alabama, Terry graduated from West End High School and the University of Alabama, receiving a B.S. degree in Aeronautical Engineering and a commission as a 2 nd Lt. in the U.S. Airforce.  He served as the pilot on flight crews on B-47 strategic bombers for six years.  Upon separation from the USAF active duty, Terry joined the Alabama Air National Guard and spent 13 years as a as a tactical fighter reconnaissance pilot flying the RF84 Thunderstreak, then the RF-4C Phantom. Also serving in the U.S. Marine Reserve as an aviation ordnance man while in high school Terry had 23 years of military service.  He continued to love and be interested in everything having to do with airplanes and flying all his life.

While on active duty, Terry met his forever wife of 62 years, Nancy R. Nighswonger, also of Birmingham, AL in Panama City Beach at the "Hangout".  They married in 1961 and in 1966 the family moved to Panama City where Terry ran a steel fabrication and manufacturing plant for many years.  The family was welcomed by many and soon became involved in many activities, clubs, and organizations.  Terry was a member of the St Andrews Bay Yacht Club, Kiwanis, Chamber of Commerce, serving on the board at various times.  Terry was named Member of the Year 1972-1973 by the Lions Club.  He served as Chairman of the Chamber Committee of 100 and served on the Panama City Variance Board January 1997 to July 2005.  Upon his retirement in 2011, Terry worked nine years for a local automobile dealership as a service assistant, which he loved, driving their customers.  Terry and Nancy were avid travelers, and many business and pleasure flights were taken with Terry in the pilot seat.  They enjoyed going off on skiing trips, football games, visiting away friends and making adventures with family and many super friends.

Terry, Pops, deeply loved his family and is survived by his lovely, gracious, and understanding wife, Nancy, of 62 years.  Daughter Elizabeth Wyatt Ellis (Jeff) of Foley, AL, son John R. Wyatt of Charlotte, NC; granddaughters Lauren Ellis and Haley Ellis; grandsons Matthew Wyatt and Brenton Wyatt.

Terry was an active member of the First United Methodist Church of Panama City, including the rowdy bunch of the Asbury Sunday School Class.  Some years he enjoyed singing in the men's HOGS choir as well as participating in the men's activities and projects.  Over the many years this church family has proven to be a treasured gift of friendship, faith, support, kindness and fun for Terry and Nancy.  Terry's family is more than grateful for the love, guidance and support that has been graciously shared by so many over the years.  Terry would also like to express his thanks and gratitude to the many employees that worked with him at the Gulf/Bay Tank Companies.

Memorialization will be by cremation with a Celebration of Life service to be held at First United Methodist Church of Panama City on Friday October 7, 2022 at 11 a.m.  The family will receive friends at the church on Friday from 10-11 a.m. prior to the service.
