Sue French Segrest, 97 of Panama City, Florida passed away on Friday July 12, 2024. Sue was born on January 2, 1927 to Carlton Eugene French and Willie Boles French in Samson, Alabama. She was proceeded in death by her husband of 51 years William Morgan Segrest, her second husband Oris Gather Hopkins; brothers Ralph French, Wayne French and Frank French and sisters Betty Smith and Jo Anne McDurmont, and her parents Carlton and Willie French.
Sue is survived by her son Steven Segrest (Elizabeth) of Panama City; daughter Terry White (Russ) of Alpharetta, Georgia and three grandchildren; Craig Segrest (Tiffany) of Panama City, Dr. Chelsea White of Scottsdale, Arizona and Alex White of Alpharetta, Georgia.
Sue lived a full life and was loved and admired by all who knew her. She attended Huntington College following WW II and later Troy University where she received her degree in Elementary Education. She loved teaching young children and taught second grade in Slocomb, Alabama until her retirement. Sue had a passion for music since an early age. She was an accomplished pianist, taking classical piano for many years and teaching piano for most of her adult life. In her later years she resided at Mathison Retirement Community in Panama City where she had many close friends. She often could be heard playing piano in the Mathison Assembly Hall and although she never liked to play for people, residents would often slip in un-noticed to listen to her play. During her years in Panama City Sue was a member of the Bay Medical Auxiliary and was an active member of First United Methodist Church of Panama City and the Asbury Sunday School Class
The family will receive friends at Wilson Funeral Home in Panama City on Thursday, 25 July from 5 to 7 PM. Graveside services will be held at 11 AM on Friday 26 July at Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Slocomb, Alabama with the Dr. Jeremy Pridgeon and Reverend Carl Fountain officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the First United Methodist Church Children's Ministry, 903 East 4th Street, Panama City, Florida, 32401 in memory of Sue Segrest.
The family would also like to send a special thank you to Sue's friends and the staff at Mathison Retirement Community. We will always remember the kind and loving way you cared for our Mother.
