Stewart Frederick Sumpton was born on November 19,1939 in Wallasey, England to parents Frederick and Renee Sumpton. Stewart attended Birkenhead School where he graduated after completing O-levels in 1955.  Stewart followed in his father's footsteps by going to sea in the Royal Merchant Navy, but found he preferred life ashore. Stewart followed his heart to the United States to marry Elizabeth in 1986, with whom he had two children, Andrew and Michele.  Moving from the sea to the river, Stewart went into the shipping industry on the Mississippi, eventually to start the successful brokerage business St. Paul Navigation in the Twin Cities of Minnesota.  As his children moved away to college Stewart launched on a new life endeavor, purchasing a towboat and barge shipyard on the coast of the Gulf of Mexico in Panama City, Florida.  Continuing to appease his adventurous spirit, Stewart travelled to Thailand where he met and fell in love with Phatcharaporn Kaew Deelee. They married in Thailand in 2002, and celebrated marriage vows again in Panama City in 2005.  Stewart and Kaew lived together happily. Sailing, theater, choir and the church communities were important pillars in their lives.  Wherever Stewart went, he charmed many people by his storytelling, humor, and intellect.  Even during his long illness of Alzheimer's, Stewart continued to be kind to his caregivers and his neighbors. Stewart left this world on April 24, 2024 surrounded by his family.  He is survived by his wife Phatcharaporn, his brothers, David and Peter Sumpton, and his children Andrew and Michele. Stewart's Celebration of Life service will be held at Holy Nativity Episcopal Church, 222 North Bonita Avenue, Panama City, Florida 32401 on Saturday, May 11, 2024 at 11 a.m. A reception will be held at the church following the service.
