ROY MAXWELL THOMPSON
Roy Maxwell Thompson, age 76, went to be with the Lord and his daughter, Dawn Marie Thompson, on
Wednesday, August 8, with his loving wife of 27 years, Merle Becker Thompson, and sister,
Martha Ray Letts, by his side. Roy was the loving father and family man to Derry Max Thompson
and wife, Cathy, Dean Michael Thompson and wife, Deidre, Stephanie McCarten and husband,
Dr. Paul McCarten and Cary Becker and wife, Susan, 14 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.
Roy is also survived by Sue Hipp Thompson.
Roy was a 1953 graduate of Trimble High School, attending the University of Tennessee
at Martin for 1 year before joining the Army for 3 years. Roy graduated from the University Of
Tennessee College Of Engineering in 1958 and was a member of the Alpha Pi Mu honorary
Industrial Engineering Society. He loved watching U.T. sports, remaining an avid fan of his Alma
mater. He worked for General Electric for 11 years. Roy was Plant Manager for Harnischfeger
in Panama City, Florida and Beloit Manhattan in Columbus, Mississippi before retiring to
Panama City where he enjoyed family and friends visiting him as often as they would come.
Roy's boat called "Roy's Toy" was one of many ways he loved entertaining family and friends by
taking them out in the Gulf. Roy was a devoted father and grandfather and a master host. Roy
was also an avid UT fan. He was a member of Woodlawn United Methodist Church.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at Woodlawn United Methodist Church on
Sunday, August 12 at 3pm with a reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, please send donations
