Colonel (Ret) Robert William Thomson, 80, of Niceville, Florida, died on Saturday, April 4, 2015. "Bob" Thomson, son of William and Rubina Thomson was born September 4, 1934 in Lawrence, Massachusetts and passed away at Chester Clifford Sims Veterans Home in Panama City, Florida with his loving wife of 22 years, Genevieve "Jean" Thomson at his side. He is survived by his wife, Jean Thomson of Niceville, FL, sister, Ina Carver of Bradford, MA and eight children; Martha (Ed) Thomas of Maryville, TN., Scott (Donna) Thomson of Aurora, CO., James Thomson of Aurora, CO., Elizabeth McCartney of St. Charles, IL, Robert II (Holly) Thomson of Clover, SC, Kathleen (Ron) Smith of Homestead, FL, Laura (Thomas) Bowen of Vestal, NY, John Davis, Hawley, PA.; He is also survived by 21 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents, his late wife, Mary Thomson, his brother, Gordon Thomson and a nephew, John Carver.
Bob was born and raised in North Andover, MA where he still has many relatives and friends. He graduated from Johnson High School in 1952 and graduated from the University of Maine in 1956. He entered the United States Army in September of 1956 serving his country with Honor for 30 years in times of war and peace which included tour of duty to Vietnam and post conflict service in Korea during the late 70's. He retired from the military in September 1986 and moved to Niceville. He was awarded many honors including the Bronze Star, National and Overseas Meritorious Service, and Commendation Medal with 4 Oak Leaf Cluster. He served as United States Army Attaché to Sweden. He was a member of the Niceville Kiwanis Club and is a past President. Golfing, yardwork and traveling were his hobbies of choice during retirement. Being with Jean, family and friends topped his list of total enjoyment.
A Memorial Mass to celebrate his life will be on Monday, April 13 at 2 p.m. in the Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church, 1200 Valparaiso Blvd., Niceville, Florida with Father Dominic Dat Tran officiating. The family will receive friends at the church from 12 Noon to 2 p.m. prior to the service. He will be laid to rest at Arlington National Cemetery. Those desiring, may make a memorial donation to Parkinson or Diabetes Research in memory of Robert Thomson. "The Eagle has soared".
