"Dick" Mathews

Richard George "Dick" Mathews, 85, of Lynn Haven, FL passed away on Sunday, May 24, 2020. He was born on September 12, 1934 in Compton, California and grew up in the Los Angeles area, graduating from San Fernando High School in 1952. He enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1954, retiring as Fighter Pilot at the age of 39 as a Lt. Colonel with a Command Pilot rating (over 3,000 total flight hours). Serving his country in the United States Air Force was the highlight of his career life. He earned his college degree from the University of West Florida at the age of 42 graduating Magna Cum Laude with a B.S. degree in Business. He then went on to work as the Operations Manager for PM&S Building Supply Company. After retiring from PM&S he took a more active role assisting his wife, Glenda, in the operations of her Merle Norman Cosmetics studio, located in the Panama City Mall. Dick was a member of Lynn Haven United Methodist Church and loved to attend the traditional service. He was also a member of the Tyndall Retired Officers Club serving as president during the 1980's. He was a member of the Lynn Haven Rotary Club, St. Andrew Bay Yacht Club, Order of Daedalians, and the Quiet Birdmen (QBs), where he very much enjoyed the comradery of his fellow pilots. Dick and Glenda loved their Friday date nights at St. Andrews Bay Yacht Club where Glenda sang to him and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Russell Joseph and Esther Mathews. He is survived by his wife, Glenda Proctor Mathews; three children, Richard "Rick" G. Mathews Jr. (Nicole), Joanna Ford (Don), Ronny Mathews (Cindy); seven grandchildren, Bonnie Sue Warner, Lorrain Mathews, Aurel Mathews, Walker Ford, Daphne Ford, Lindsey Mathews, Ryan Mathews; four great grandchildren, Silas Warner, Jon-Carl Warner, Anna-Bell Warner, Kloie Warner; one brother, Russell Mathews Jr. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, May 30, 2020 at 2 pm in the Wilson Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow at Forest Lawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Saturday from 1-2 pm prior to the service. Those desiring may make memorial donations to the Lynn Haven United Methodist Church Building Fund in memory of Dick Mathews.
