PEGGY JANE SMITH

Peggy Jane Smith, known by many as "Miss America", age 75, of Panama City went home to be with her Lord and Saviour December 10, 2006. She was Baptist by faith. Peggy trusted Christ at age 18. Her favorite scriptures were Matthew 5, Sermon on the Mount, and Romans 1:16. She was born in Angier, North Carolina on October 10, 1931 to C.F. and Dottie Dean. She lived in Southern Florida, Colorado and Washington State, before settling in Panama City, where she lived with her husband, Leon Smith of 57 years since 1998. She was a faithful member of Central Baptist Church. Mrs. Smith is predeceased by sisters, Dorothy Barbee, Claudia Matthews, Ruby Hutchins, Mildred Mitchell and brother, Ernest Dean. She is survived by her husband, Leon; daughters, Dianna Wishon and Dottie Cook of Seattle, WA, Jan Draughon of Atlanta, GA; two brothers, Billy Dean of Oxford, NC, and David Dean of Nashville, TN; two sisters, Doris Russell of Durham, NC, and Shirley Dean of Hope Mills, NC, six grandchildren, Melissa Riley, Eva and Giselle Cook, Joseph, Lauren and Gabriel Draughon; and two great grandchildren, Kaylee and Dawn Riley, six nephews and one niece. Peggy was a loving, cheerful and happy person. Everyone that knew her loved her; she touched the lives of so many people. She loved sewing and working with her hands, she made many beautiful things in her craft room. She liked to travel and loved to listen to gospel music. She worked for Boeing Aircraft Company on 727's and 747's. She was recognized for her ideas that improved production procedure. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. in the Wilson Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Bruce Barton, John Barton and Pastor Michael Draughon officiating. Interment will follow in the Evergreen Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. Those who desire may make a donation to the Central Baptist Church Mission Fund, 1104 Balboa Avenue, Panama City, Florida 32401 in memory of Peggy Jane Smith.
