Peggy Griffith Ogren, of Panama City Beach, died of complications from dementia on May 21, 2014. She was 78 years old.
Born in Monroeville, Alabama, on February 16, 1936, to James O'Neal and Minnie Mae Griffith, Peggy studied Physical Education and English at Troy State University and received a Masters in Physical Education from the University of Alabama. She taught Physical Education and Health in Enterprise, AL, Crestview, FL, New Orleans, LA, Middletown, NJ, and at Everett Junior High and Hutchison Beach Elementary in Bay County, Florida.
Peggy was passionate about civil rights and women's equality. A true "health nut," her commitment to nutrition and physical activity endured throughout her life.
Peggy was a long-time volunteer with Friends of St. Andrews State Park, and walked miles of beach every day. Consistent with her wishes to contribute to scientific research, a portion of her remains has been donated to the McKnight Brain Institute at the University of Florida.
Peggy was a devoted wife, mother, and friend. She was preceded in death by her sister, Betty Ann Coyle and is survived by her husband of 49 years, Larry, daughter, Kim, niece, Ann Coyle, and nephew, Carlos Coyle.
In lieu of a memorial service, friends may honor her with a contribution to their favorite animal rescue organization or Friends of St. Andrews State Park. The family expresses its deep gratitude to the wonderful individuals who cared for Peggy over the last three years, enabling her to enjoy life and pass with dignity.
