PAUL EDWIN JONES

Colonel (Ret) Paul Edwin Jones, 88, died peacefully, surrounded by his loving family on May 1, 2009 in a local nursing home.

He was born February 7, 1921 in Aragon, Georgia to William McClellan and Cora Belle Stepp Jones. He was one of nine children and lived in Aragon most of his childhood. He attended Georgia Institute of Technology and Memphis State University. He enlisted in what was known as the Army Air Corps. In 1946, he married Betty Bridges of Thomasville, Georgia.

As a career military officer, he spent 30 years serving his country both in the United States and overseas as a pilot in the Strategic Air Command.

As a P-38 pilot in the Pacific Theater in World War II, he was awarded the Silver Star after shooting down two Japanese Mig's in a dogfight; saving the life of another pilot.

He had been a resident of Lynn Haven for 25 years, moving here from North Carolina. He was a member of the Lynn Haven United Methodist Church. He was a former member of the Panama City Country Club. In his retirement, he enjoyed playing golf, repairing clubs, and also worked as a volunteer for tournaments throughout the Florida Panhandle. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Georgia. He was a member of the Order of Daedaleans and the Air Force Officer's Association.

He is survived by his wife, Betty Bridges Jones of Lynn Haven; daughter, Shelley Yancey of Lynn Haven; son, David M. Jones and wife Marla of Kennesaw, Georgia; 2 grandchildren, Mary Catherine Jones and Ryan Jones of Kennesaw, Georgia; brother, Robert Jones of McDonough, Georgia; sister, Jean Campbell and husband, Lane of Colquitt, Georgia; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorialization will be by cremation; Colonel Jones will be interred in Georgia National Cemetery in Canton, Georgia with full military honors.
