IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Paul Ritter
Johnson
December 4, 1927 – July 25, 2022
Paul Ritter Johnson, 94, of Panama City Beach, FL, passed away on Monday, July 25, 2022. Born to Frederick Heppe Johnson and Mary Johnson née Ritter on December 4, 1927, in Allentown, PA, Paul grew up wanting to be a dentist, like his father. He met the love of his life, Alice Smith, while in high school, but dreams of dentistry and romance were all postponed by the Second World War. Paul shipped west to Fort Ord, CA, following his basic training at Fort Jackson, SC, where he trained as a radio operator in an Engineer Special Brigade assigned to the Second Infantry Division and prepared for potential invasion operations related to Operation OLYMPIC, which were fortunately never required. Returning home, Paul returned to his studies at Muhlenberg College in Allentown, where he studied micro-biology and played Division III collegiate soccer - a fact he told his family only when his great-grandchildren took up the sport. After a long and sometimes distant romance, he and Alice married in 1950, beginning their lives together in Allentown, PA. While they moved around throughout the 1950s and 60s, all three children would be born in Allentown, where their parents lived nearly their entire lives. Paul worked many years as a brick salesman for Glen Gary, working his way up to be VP of Marketing, and vacationing on the Jersey Shore; while raising his family, he also found time to obtain his private pilot's license. It was also during this period Paul began his involvement with the Rotary Club, an institution he and Jackie would be devoted for nearly half a century. It was through Rotary all three of his children would go abroad for summer exchanges, and through which they would host their own exchange student, Martinka "Twink" Hoeksema, and then welcomed another surrogate daughter into their home as Jeri brought home her roommate in boarding school, Watchariporn "Watchy" Thoopthong. Over the years, Paul and Jackie visited both in their home countries of the Netherlands and Thailand, and remained in touch for the rest of their lives. After Glen Gary was bought by a Canadian firm, Paul and Jackie felt the pull of Florida, moving to Vero Beach in 1984, where Paul began a second career as a financial planner, and Jackie went into real estate. Paul and Jackie loved to travel, and their involvement in Rotary would both take them all over the world, and bring countless visitors to their home in Vero Beach. In Florida, they found their spiritual home at the First Presbyterian Church, which they attended without fail. In addition to Rotary, Paul was also a Mason - as his father before him - and a member of the Lions Club. In his later years he served as Chairman of the Indian River Foundation for the Elderly, which assisted in paying healthcare costs for indigent residents of Indian River County. But through all his activities, his family was at the center of his life, and he was never happier than when they were all around. He remained close to his wife's brother and sister-in-law, Joel and Diana Smith, with whom he spoke weekly. During his last years, Paul moved to Panama City, where he could be closer to his remaining children Jeffrey and Jeri, his daughter-in-law Serena Dee, and his grandson, Eric and his partner Dianna. In Panama City, "Team Paul" was created, and Paul entertained and charmed the rotation of visitors who came by; a special thanks to the incredible nurses at Emerald Coast Hospice, Cheryl Good, John Cassell, Shawn and Blanca Palmer, Steve and Mary Wiemkin, John Perkins, Crystal Fogg, and Kaiden Ducker. He also became active in a new local church, Gulf Beach Presbyterian. Paul was preceded in death by his wife, Alice "Jackie" Johnson; his daughter, Jolie Johnson Morris; two brothers, Fred Johnson Jr., and Dale Johnson Sr. He is survived by two children, Jeri Johnson (Serena Dee), Jeffrey Lee Johnson; two grandchildren, Gregory Morris (Yuka), and Eric Johnson (DIanna); three great-grandchildren, Grace Morris, Alexander Morris, and Kent Morris; two nephews Matthew Johnson (Aimee), Michael Johnson (Karin); two nieces Leslie Smith and Jan Hoover Johnson; and a great-niece Abby Johnson. A small family internment service will be held at a time to be determined at First Presbyterian Church of Vero Beach. In lieu of flowers, please direct donations to the Central Florida Animal Reserve.
