Obituary

Patricia Anne (Patty) Segler died peacefully on November 3, 2023, at St. Vincents Hospital in Jacksonville, FL surrounded by her children. Patty was born in 1930 in Jersey City, NJ to Franklin Fay and Carol (Aylsworth) Yearsley. She grew up in Tampa and Jacksonville, FL and was Valedictorian of the 1948 Landon High School Class. After two years at FSU, she transferred to the University of Nebraska, Lincoln where her mother and stepfather, Roy Randolph, lived. Following graduation, she returned to Panama City where she taught first grade at the Drummond Park School (now Lucille Moore Elementary) in St. Andrews until the birth of her first son, Randy, in 1959. She married Jack Norris Segler (1922-2014) in 1956. They were married for 58 years, and she was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother.

Patty was active in the Junior Service League, the Junior Museum, the First United Methodist Church of Panama City and numerous other charities she was part of the team that created the original "Bay Leaves" cookbook and its follow-up "Beyond the Bay." Recipes from Jack and Patty appear in them.  She was a wonderful cook and loved hosting friends. Family especially loved her cornbread dressing, "Grammie's cheese grits", buttermilk pie, and the scrumptious "Grammie (green) beans" that none of us have ever successfully replicated despite filming and studying her method.

When schoolteachers went on strike in the 1960's, Patty set up a classroom on the back porch and conducted schoolwork for a collection of very disappointed children whose heart had been set on unlimited play time.

Jack and daughter Kim brought home a plethora of stray dogs over the years which Patty doted on and loved. Patty laughed often and her laugh was infectious. She loved a good joke which was a good thing because Jack was a prankster and Kim thrived on getting both tickled.

She treasured her family and her network of close friends.

First with her mother and then with son, Randy, she enjoyed genealogy research. Patty was the consummate organizer and recorder of all things (birthday parties, holidays, gifts, expenses, etc.) Future generations will continue to appreciate Patty because, unlike most of us, she labeled her photos!

She was a passionate reader (cataloging what she'd read, of course) and, in her later years, loved crossword, jigsaw, and various other puzzles.

Jack preceded her in death. Survivors include sons Randy (Ann) of Panama City, Mike (Shyla) of Marietta, GA, and daughter Kim of Jacksonville, grandchildren Bryce and Carson of Panama City, Matthew of Denver, CO, and Ashlyn of Marietta, GA, stepbrothers Ted Randolph of Kirkwood, MO and Bernie (Margie) Randolph of Columbia, S.C.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, November 8, 2023 at 1 p.m. in the Wilson Funeral Home Chapel.  The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Wednesday from 12 noon-1 p.m. prior to the service.  Interment will follow in the Evergreen Memorial Gardens.

In lieu of flowers, the family request that memorial donations be made in Patty's memory to the First United Methodist Church of Panama City or to the Bay County Humane Society.
