Obituary

Nell Jones Poyner, 99, of Panama City, FL passed away on Thursday, February 17, 2022. She was born on January 2, 1923 in Dothan, AL to Wiliam Thomas and Marie Clendinen Jones. She graduated from Dothan High School and was a 1944 graduate of Huntingdon College in Montgomery, AL. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Dr. James A. Poyner; three sisters, Marjorie Dowling, Marie Louise Rogers and Evelyn Newberry. She is survived by three children, James A. Poyner Jr. (Linda), Diana Huggins (Bill), Russell Scott Poyner (Laurie); four grandchildren, James "Jim" Poyner III (Anna), Matthew Poyner (Laura), Suzanna Lee Davis, Scott Poyner (Alyssa); seven great grandchildren, Briggs, Eva Nell, Walker, Pace, Madison, Breanna, Wesley; nieces, Gayle Swatts and Judy Dowling. Our mother spent her life devoted to the "love of her life", Jimmy (whom she fell in love with in the 7 th grade) and her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She loved her church (First United Methodist Church) and was a faithful servant to her Lord and church. She served as Literature Secretary for 15 years and was active in the United Methodist Women. She and our daddy were instrumental along with others in getting the television ministry started. It was so important to them, and in her later years became her means of worship from home. As a younger woman our mother enjoyed playing golf and tennis. Her love of the game of Bridge spanned over 50 years with a group of women she played with weekly. This group of ladies became her lifelong friends. Our mother also volunteered in the community with the March of Dimes and was a charter member of what is now the Junior Service League. Our mama was the epitome of a gentle, true southern lady, our steel magnolia, proper in every way. Our mama spent the last 2+ years of her life at the Bee Hive Home Assisted Living Facility of Lynn Haven. There she was loved and cared for by the most compassionate group of caregivers. We are eternally grateful to the Bee Hive Staff. At her passing she was being cared for by VITAS Healthcare Hospice. Thank you so much to these giving and loving professionals. All of these caregivers had such tender hearts and loved caring for our mama. They became our family as well. Funeral services will be held on Friday, February 25, 2022 at 2 pm in the Wilson Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow in the Evergreen Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Friday from 1-2 pm prior to the service. Those desiring may make memorial donations to the TV Ministry at First United Methodist Church in memory of Nell Poyner.
