MILDRED JERNIGAN LUKENS
Mildred Jernigan Lukens passed away at her home in Bagdad, Florida on Saturday, March 3, 2007. She was born in Covington County, Alabama, on July 26, 1924. Mrs. Lukens was preceded in death by her husband of 37 years Leonard F. Jernigan of Panama City, and Howard I. Lukens of Milton, whom she married in 1996, her parents Thomas Allen and Jennie Lundy, brother, Calvin Lundy, sister, Grace Tackett and grandson, Tyler Jernigan. She is survived by her son, Len Jernigan and wife Jeana of Flowery Branch, Georgia, daughter, Becky Waldorff and husband Bubba of Wewahitchka adopted son, Tom Gainer and wife Evelyn of Panama City, two sisters, Loucile Volk of Pensacola, Jennie Raye Hutcheson of Milton and brother, Talmadge Lundy of Milton, four grandchildren, Amy Lister of Cumming, Georgia, Larson Jernigan of Flowery Branch, Georgia, Cindy Faucher of Canada, Kevin Gainer of Eufaula, Alabama, three great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Mildred and her husband Leonard Jernigan founded several businesses in Panama City: Bay County Hatchery, Bay County Farm and Garden Supply, Jernigan's TV and Appliance Center, Green Thumb Nursery, Kirby TV, Lazy Days Motel, and the Coffee Cup Restaurant. During the years they lived in Winter Haven, Florida, Mildred worked for the Polk County School Board, and later when she moved back to Panama City at Boyd Brothers, Inc. Upon relocating to Bagdad, Florida, she worked for several years at Mayes Printing and Office Supply and Gulf Coast Office Products in Pensacola. She was active in the Pensacola Chamber of Commerce. Mildred loved the Lord and loved her church. When she lived in Panama City, she was an active member of Trinity United Methodist Church, serving as the youth director as well as many other roles, and was active in the St. John United Methodist Church when she lived in Winter Haven. She loved young people and had a profound influence on the lives of many young lives through her years of service to the Lord. Mildred enjoyed nature and the beauty of her flowers and birds. She was program director for the Panama City Garden Club for a number of years. She graduated from Floral Design School in Atlanta, Georgia, and was well-known for her beautiful floral arrangements. Visitation will be at Wilson Funeral Home, 214 Airport Road in Panama City from 5:00 - 7:00 PM on Wednesday. Funeral Services will be in the Wilson Funeral Home Chapel on Thursday at 11 a.m. with Rev. Cooper Stinson officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Memorial Gardens.
