IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Michael Jeptha
Stokes, Md
March 8, 1951 – November 17, 2024
Michael Jeptha Stokes, MD, passed away peacefully on November 17, 2024, surrounded by his loving family. He devoted himself to God, family, and his calling as a physician, and he will be remembered for his faith, compassion, and dedication to those he served.
Born on March 8, 1951, in Dothan, AL, he grew up in Jackson County, FL, as the beloved son of Myrus R. ("M.R.") and Willa Dean Stokes. Valedictorian of Graceville High School's class of 1969, he earned a degree in civil engineering from Georgia Tech University in 1973 before pursuing a medical degree at the University of Miami, graduating in just three years. He completed his residency and fellowship in internal medicine at the University of Texas, Houston.
A proud veteran, he served as a Captain in the Army at Redstone Arsenal from 1979 to 1982. Afterward, he returned to Jackson County to practice as an internist. His dedication to lifelong learning led him to complete a fellowship in interventional cardiology from 1989 to 1991, after which he joined the Cardiovascular Institute of North Florida, practicing as a cardiologist until his passing.
Faith was the cornerstone of his life. A devout Christian and member of the First Baptist Church of Panama City for the last decade, he was steadfast in his devotion to God and supported his family's spiritual growth.
An avid outdoorsman, he found joy in hunting quail and grouse, shooting skeet and sporting clays, and fishing in all forms - fly fishing, freshwater, and inshore. A die-hard Miami Hurricanes fan, he "bled orange and green" and cherished every moment cheering for his team, especially on the football field.
He is survived by his wife, Shauna; his children, Rhea and Jeptha (and fiancé Amanda); and his adored grandchildren, Isaac, Asher, and Sawyer. He also leaves behind his sisters, Jacque Stokes-Taylor (and husband Joe) and Patti Stokes-Shuttlesworth (and husband Bob), along with extended family and many cherished friends.
The funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, November 23, 2024, at the First United Methodist Church of Marianna, FL, officiated by Dr. Kenneth Taylor. Visitation will take place the evening prior, Friday, November 22, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the First Baptist Church of Panama City Fellowship Hall (former Sanctuary located at 6th Street and Harrison Avenue).
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to MD Anderson Cancer Center (DIYR24), P.O. Box 4470, Houston, Texas 77210, or https://mdanderson.donordrive.com/participant/OhanianResearch in his honor.
A legacy of faith, love, and unwavering dedication, he will remain in the hearts of those who knew him. He will be profoundly missed but never forgotten.
