Obituary

Maude Mellen McCain Farris

March 21, 1942 – September 15, 2020

Maude Mellen McCain, daughter of Adam and Maude McCain, was born in Meridian, Mississippi. At an early age her family moved from Livingston, Alabama to Appomattox, Virginia where Maude's father was employed as a Pharmacist. After World War II the family moved back to Livingston, Alabama.

Maude attended public schools in Livingston then entered Judson College. Later Maude transferred to Livingston State University where she received a degree in Elementary Education.

Maude taught second grade in Butler, Choctaw County, Alabama for two years, then transferred to Calhoun County, Alabama where she taught second grade for another two years.

Maude met 1st Lt. Elvin Farris while attending Parker Memorial Baptist Church in Anniston, Alabama. Elvin was stationed at nearby Fort McClellan. They were married in Livingston, Alabama and moved to Chipley, Florida after Maude completed her school duties for the year.

Maude became a home maker after her move to Florida and enjoyed being a "Mom" with the arrival of two sons, Charles and William (Bill).

In addition to raising her children and being a home maker, Maude enjoyed serving her Lord, Jesus Christ, by teaching young children in Sunday School and other activities, both in her church as well at school as opportunities arose.

While "working with children" was rewarding Maude also enjoyed music; She and Elvin were members of several church choirs.

In 2013 Maude and Elvin moved from Panama City to Orlando to be closer to their son, Bill, and his family. Maude was able to see her granddaughter, Jacqueline, grow from a young teenager into a young woman and enjoyed keeping up with Jacqueline's progress in school and athletic activities.

Maude is survived by her husband, Elvin Farris, son, Bill (Patty) Farris, granddaughter Jacqueline Farris and Patty's mother, Gloria Gomez. Maude is also survived by two sisters: Susan (Allen) Baas and Henrietta (Herbert "Buddy") Saelens. A special cousin, Frances Banakas also survives. Frances kept sisters and other relatives posted on Maude's health over the past several months. Maude is also survived by numerous nephews and nieces. Two friends of our son, Charles, also survive, George Dudley and Joe Roberts, friends of Charles who Maude continued a friendship.

Maude's parents, her oldest son, Charles Farris, and oldest sister, Grace Lee, preceded her in death. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, September 26, 2020 at 11 am in the Wilson Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will occur at Evergreen Memorial Gardens in Bay County, Florida. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 10-11 am prior to the service.
