Mary Ellen Stephens Murphy

Mary Ellen Stephens Murphy, 96, of Panama City, FL, died Sunday, February 6, 2011. She was born December 27, 1914, to parents John Calvin and Amanda Belle Stephens in Clio, Alabama. She had been a resident of Panama City since 1939.
She was a long time member of the First United Methodist Church of Panama City. She and her husband, Malachi, were active and instrumental in starting and supporting the first school in Panama City for the mentally challenged, The Mary Mackin School, which has since become the St. Andrew Bay Center. Mary Ellen was a member of the Bay Line Railroad Trainmen's Wives Club and the Redbud Circle of the Panama City Garden Club; but, most of all, she was a wonderful wife and a loving mother to her six children.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Malachi Hillery Murphy; and by their sons, Benjamin "Ben" Stephens Murphy, Malachi Hillery Murphy III, William "Bill" Edward Murphy, and by their daughter, Ginger Ellen Murphy Williford. She is survived by their son, John Virgil Murphy and wife, Gayle, of Port St. Joe, FL; their daughter, Mary Olivia Murphy Sadler and husband, Hazen, also of Port St. Joe, FL; their son-in-law, Bobby B. Williford of Salem, SC; 7 grandchildren, Greg Williford of Mechanicsville, VA, Shanan Williford Sheppard (Vernon) of Greenville, SC, Ginger Williford Ingle (Jeff) of Greer, SC, Haze Sadler (Holli) of Albany, GA, Olivia Sadler Hopkins (John) of Waycross, GA, Selena Murphy Baumgardner (Ron) of Port St. Joe, FL, John Murphy, Jr., of Panama City, FL, and 16 great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, February 19, 2011, at 3:00 p.m. CT at Wilson Funeral Home with Rev. Mac Fulcher officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. A private family interment was held on February 11, 2011. In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Mary Ellen may be made to the St. Andrew Bay Center, 1804 Carolina Avenue, Lynn Haven, FL 32444, or to a charity of your choice.
The family wishes to extend a special thank you to the staff at The Bridge at Bay St. Joe for the compassionate and loving care they gave to Mary Ellen.
