Mary Jean Foley Wimpenny, 92, of Panama City, died Sunday, January 28, 2024, after a brief illness. In her final days, she was surrounded by family and friends. Her life was defined by care for others, who are now bereft with her loss.

She leaves behind the love of her life and husband of 70 years, Art, their two children David (Marlene) and Sara (Peter), many grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and her brother Charles (Donna) and his children.

Mary graduated from the University of Michigan in 1953, with a fine record excepting one semester of academic probation after meeting Art. Mary's career as a special education teacher spanned four decades and four states. She was named Teacher of the Year during her time in Louisiana, and she spent many cherished years at Margaret K. Lewis School. Mary continued to serve on the MKL School Advisory Council until the end.

Mary and Art logged thousands of miles in their travels together, including their annual drive to the cottage in Ontario. Those journeys were another opportunity to connect with close friends and family, and they were made more special when a grandchild or two could join them.

The telephone was Mary's ministry, and she used it to keep in daily contact with her children, friends, and "grands." Mary volunteered weekly at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, calling her fellow churchgoers who needed a little TLC. Those she leaves behind aspire to live up to her legacy of infinite love.

A memorial service will be held at St. Andrew's Episcopal on Saturday, February 3, at 11 a.m. Memorials preferred to Humble House or St. Jude's.
