IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Martha Surles
Homola
March 10, 1928 – January 25, 2026
Martha Homola passed away on January 25, 2026 at 97 years of age. She was born March 10, 1928, on the Bellagio Plantation in East Carroll Parish, Lake Providence, Louisiana, a daughter of Blondelle and Alphy Pittman Surles. Martha had three brothers, James, Albert, and Walter, and a sister, Evelyn, all of whom are now deceased.
Martha played a clarinet in her high school band. After graduating from Lake Providence High School in 1946, she attended Judson College in Marion, Alabama for 3 years.
When Martha’s father died on October 28, 1948, Martha left college and returned to Lake Providence to operate Planters Butane, a gas company she inherited from her father.
In 1951, Martha and her mother moved to Panama City, Florida, to be near her mother’s three sisters, one who lived in Panama City, one in Dothan, Alabama, and another in Hartford, Alabama. Martha worked at the Marie Hotel in downtown Panama City as a desk clerk and then as a typist for Howell & Conner Insurance & Real Estate. In May of 1951, she was employed by Panama Title Corporation, a land title company owned by Waldo Wallace.
Martha married Samuel Homola in October 15, 1957. She met Sam in 1956 when she visited his chiropractic office seeking treatment for back pain. Sam always said that Martha’s first visit to his office was the luckiest day of his life. In 1988, Martha went to work in Sam’s office as a secretary and receptionist.
Through the years, Martha and Sam enjoyed fishing, boating, and traveling. They treasured the wildlife and the pristine beaches and waterways of Bay County. They both felt that Panama City was the best place in the world to live, where ocean views of the sunset were a constant reminder that each day of life is a wonderful gift.
Martha enjoyed working and visiting with the ladies at the Panama City Woman’s Club. Her friendly and attentive manner earned her love and loyalty from friends and family alike.
Martha and Sam shared 68 wonderful years in happy marriage. Martha’s physical presence will be missed, but fond memories of her will continue to live in the hearts and minds of everyone who knew her.
Rest in peace, Martha, with God’s blessing for a job well done.
A Celebration of Life will be private. Friends can visit with Martha on the Guest Book of her Wilson Funeral Home obituary.
