Margaret Simpson
April 12, 1910—October 30, 2007
During the Second World War, Margaret Simpson joined the WACS. But because she was badly needed as a teacher, her principal eventually convinced her to return to her teaching position at Edison School in Westmont, NJ. Margaret taught generations of students in the Haddon Township, NJ school system and was probably one of their longest serving teachers.
Margaret was also an inveterate traveler. In the summers after the war, she would pack up a trunk and bicycle and take a ship to Europe; there she would join groups of young women who would then bicycle over most of Britain. As she grew older, Margaret's trips became less athletic, but more exotic. She traveled to Russia, Japan, China, New Zealand, Australia, Canada and pretty much most of the world. She took courses related to trips, joined groups studying abroad, and when she was in her eighties she took one trip where she lived with a Japanese family in Japan.
Margaret's life was long and rich. She earned her teacher's credentials at the Glassboro, NJ Normal School. She earned two Master's degrees, one in Math and one in Geography, then, a year or so before her retirement, she began working towards a Ph.D. in Math at the University of Pennsylvania. Margaret was also an accomplished artist, her favorite medium being watercolor.
Margaret enjoyed four decades of retirement. She moved to Panama City Florida when she retired, and was a member of the Lynn Haven Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star. Margaret was an active member of the Panama City Beach Senior's Center, where she took art classes, and a long time member of the Sunshine Club. She had a long and rich life. She was independent, adventurous, intelligent and accomplished right up to the end. She will be sorely missed.
Margaret is survived by her beloved goddaughter, Margaret Berry of Peterborough, Ontario, nephew David Simpson of Mullica Hills, NJ, cousin Jeanne Peterson of Jacksonville, FL, and nieces, nephews and friends too numerous to mention.
A memorial service will be held soon at Wilson Funeral Home in Panama City FL. The date will be announced later.
