Obituary

LONIE B. AVERY

Lonie B. Avery, 90, of Panama City, passed away Thursday, March 10, 2011 in a local hospital. He was born May 18, 1920 in Cottonwood, Alabama, to William W. Avery and Mamie Hooper Avery. Lonie had been a resident of Panama City since 1933, and he served honorably in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was a retired purchasing agent and household goods inspector at the Naval Coastal Systems Center, aka, the Navy Base. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Panama City and the Exchange Club. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Ausbon Avery, Edgar Avery, and Kermit Avery and one sister, Estelle Arnold Jacobs. He is survived by his wife, Jonnie Avery, his soul-mate and love of 56 years; his loving daughter Nancy Rowell and her husband Paul, of Tallahassee; and three generations of devoted nieces and nephews.
Lonie had a passion for people, animals, fishing, flowers, and dessert. He embraced life and all the little things that made each day special to him. He loved Panama City and took pride in tracking its new construction and growth, particularly since his civil service career with the Navy Base took him to so many places to conduct business with the town's fine people. Outings were special with Lonie because he encountered someone he knew wherever he went and there was always a story to be shared. He had a loving and gentle nature adored by all, including his nurses and caregivers in his final days. He was a front porch man and took pleasure in the traffic of his neighborhood and patiently waiting for the mail. Everywhere he went, he made a new friend with his sincere and beautiful smile and his warm handshake. This kindest and gentlest of men will be honored as follows:
The family will receive friends at Wilson Funeral Home Monday, March 14th from 5:00-8:00pm.
