LILLIE HORD BREWTON
Lillie Hord Brewton, of Panama City, died Sunday evening, July 02, 2006 at her home. She was 92 years of age and was born in Keyesport, Clinton County, Illinois. Lillie taught Latin at Centralia, IL; before coming to Panama City in 1944. At an educational function, she met the Bay County High School Principal who hired her to teach Latin at the school where she taught for many years. She received her Bachelors of Education Degree from Southern Illinois University and her Masters Degree from the University of Illinois. She was a lifetime member of the Panama City Music Association, a member of Kappa Delta Pi, St. Andrew's Bay Yacht Club, Gulf Coast College Foundation and one of the original People's First Bank Prime 55 Board Members. She received numerous honors for her achievements, namely the first district teacher of the year ever to be chosen in Bay County and the Lifetime Achievement award from Bay Arts and Alliance. She married Harvey Brewton June 30, 1960 in St. Louis. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harvey Brewton, sister, Mildred Wortman, and sister Lena Duke of St. Louis, MO. She is survived by her step son Andre Brewton of Panama City, three step grandsons, nephews, Steven Wortman of Sacramento, CA, and John Duke of St. Louis, MO. Funeral services will be held at Wilson Funeral Home Chapel at 10:00 a.m. Thursday with Dr. Richard Watson officiating. Entombment will follow in Evergreen Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at Wilson Funeral Home Wednesday evening from 6 – 8 p.m. Those desiring may make donations to the First Presbyterian Church Memorial Fund or the Lillie Brewton Memorial Scholarship at Bay County High School.
