LESTER C. "LES" BROCK

Lester C. (Les) Brock, 89, of Panama City passed away at home Sunday, November 4, 2012. He was born in 1923 to Mr. and Mrs. Oscar H. Brock in Washington, North Carolina; he grew up in Newport News, Virginia.
Mr. Brock served in WWII as an officer in the US Air Force in the European Theater. Upon his return, he attended the College of William and Mary and the University of Alabama, where he received his Bachelor's and Master's degrees. While at the University of Alabama, he was a lettered member of the track team and the "A" Club, and was commissioned in the USAF ROTC.
Mr. Brock worked in the Bay County School system for 34 years as a coach and teacher, assistant principal and guidance counselor. In addition, he served in the US Air Force Reserve, retiring as a Lt. Colonel. He was an active member of the First United Methodist Church for over 50 years, serving in many areas, including the Official Board, Superintendent of Sunday school, the church choir, visitation committee, and was a member of the Asbury Sunday School Class.
Active in many community activities, Mr. Brock was a member of the Red Cross and on the Board of Directors for many years. He taught many swimming, CPR and first aid courses for the Red Cross. Other volunteer positions included coaching for the little league, mediating for small claims court and conducting the Kiwanis Regional Spelling Bees for several years. He delivered Meals on Wheels, and was a member of Bama Fans, the Kiwanis Club and the St. Andrews Bay Yacht Club, where he was an avid sailor and participated in many sailing events for 45 years. Mr. Brock also enjoyed membership in the Bay Bulls Investment Club and the Football Officials Association.
Mr. Brock was predeceased by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. O.H. Brock. He has one surviving sister, Rachel, of Sun City, AZ. Also surviving him are his wife of 62 years, Martha Maxwell Brock, his daughter and her husband, Angie and Dan Adams of Panama City and his son and his wife, Jim and Jane Brock, of Birmingham, AL. He is survived by his grandchildren; Brock Adams and his wife Jill, of Spartanburg, SC, John Adams of Birmingham, AL, and Sarah Jane Thorn and her husband, Taylor, of Tulsa, OK.
Friends will be received for an hour before the memorial service begins at 2:00 pm on Sunday, November 11, 2012 at the First United Methodist Church. The Asbury Sunday School Class is asked to serve as honorary pallbearers. Those wishing to express a remembrance in honor of Les Brock are encouraged to consider a contribution in his name to The Rescue Mission, 650 Jenks Avenue, Panama City, FL 32401, which was of special interest to him, or to a charity of your choice.
The family wishes to extend their gratitude to Emerald Coast Hospice staff and caregivers for their professional and loving care during his illness and also to his devoted caregivers, Stacy Jacobs, Sherry Cromer, Frances Nichols and Janet Brannen.
