IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Leroy Retherford
Jr.
July 29, 1939 – October 13, 2021
LeRoy Retherford, Jr., 82, of Panama City, FL went home to be with the Lord on October 13, 2021.
LeRoy was born on July 29, 1939 to LeRoy Sr. and Evelyn Maddox Retherford in Panama City. He had polio as a young boy, which left him wheelchair bound by his early 20's. But polio proved to be no match for LeRoy.
After graduating from Bay High School, LeRoy went to work as the switchboard operator at Bay Memorial Hospital. Shortly thereafter, he was promoted to Payroll Supervisor and eventually was named Personnel Director of the hospital. In his time at Bay Memorial he met his future wife, Dixie Doty, who also worked there. They began dating shortly afterward, and married 3 years later in 1967. They celebrated their 54 th anniversary this past February.
LeRoy was an avid outdoorsman and lived an active lifestyle for many years, despite the wheelchair. With extraordinary upper body strength, he was able to get in and out of his truck unassisted, and even managed to board his boat and enjoy time on the water with his family and friends. Everyone who knew LeRoy was amazed at his "mobility" and really never considered him handicapped.
LeRoy loved the Lord, and served faithfully for many years at St. Andrew Presbyterian Church where his parents served, and where Dixie still actively serves. He was a loving husband, son, brother, brother-in-law, and a very special uncle to his nieces and nephews who all loved their "Uncle Roy" very much.
LeRoy is preceded in death by his parents, LeRoy Sr and Evelyn Maddox Retherford and sister, Lois Jean Retherford Skates. He is survived by his wife Dixie Retherford and many other relatives and friends who will miss him. But will also celebrate the fact that he is now WALKING the streets of gold with his Savior, Jesus Christ.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, October 16, 2021 at 2 pm in the Wilson Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow in the Greenwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Saturday from 1-2 pm prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to the following charities near and dear to LeRoy and Dixie, The Village Church in St. Andrews (formerly St. Andrews Presbyterian Church) building fund or to the Samaritan's Purse.
