Obituary

La Verne James Sweet died January 27, 2021 in his home of natural causes. He was born February 21, 1947 in Oilton, Oklahoma. Mr. Sweet moved to Tallahassee, Florida in 1958 and then to Panama City, Florida in 1966. He was preceded in death by his parents Lowell Bevins and Erma Belle Sweet; brothers, C.W. and Ralph Wilson and his first great-granddaughter Aurora Traman. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Shirley Fay Leonard Sweet; children, Tracy Brannon, Angela Mayer (Mark), and James Lowell Sweet (Virginia); grandchildren, Chief Petty Officer Kenneth Brannon, USN, William Brannon, Sergeant Christina Egan, USMC, William Bradley Egan, Ashleigh Day, James Lowell Sweet, Jr.; great granddaughter, Caroline Traman; siblings, Erma Jo Brickhouse (Eugene), John Sweet (Carol), Jane Blanton (Bill), Roberta Walters, Ernest Ray Sweet (Peggy); and nephew, more like a brother, Gary Register, along with numerous generations of nieces and nephews. Mr. Sweet was a Christian having been baptized at a young age in the Seventh Day Adventist Church. He was a 1965 graduate of Leon High School in Tallahassee, FL. He was a republican and supporter of FSU football. Mr. Sweet managed Panama Machinery and Supply's Truss Plant in the late 1960's. He worked as a construction superintendent for many years with Major Development for Charles Faircloth and Bill Grimsley. In his later years he was a monitor technician at Bay Medical Center. He loved to pull jokes on family and friends and nothing seemed to bring him greater joy than spending time bragging on his military grandchildren and his "Sweet Caroline". Funeral services will be held on Saturday, January 30, 2021 at 2 pm in the Wilson Funeral Home Chapel. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 1-2 pm prior to the service. A graveside service will be held at Oak Hill Cemetery, Cartersville, GA on Monday, February 1, 2021 at 2 pm EST.
