Obituary

Katie M. Greenwood, 89, of Panama City, passed away on Saturday May 28  th  .

Katie was born December 18, 1932 in Savannah GA to Will and Maggie Greenwood.  She was preceded in death by her sisters, Mary Driver, Ruth Coley, Virginia Hersey, Sara Taylor and brothers, Bill Greenwood and Johnny Greenwood and a very special stepdaughter, Cathy Dale Adkison.

During her lifetime, Katie lived in several different cities and states.  Other than her hometown of Savannah, GA Katie spent most of her life in Albany GA where she was a florist for many different places but predominantly for Hall Horne Wholesale Florist, Gayfers, the Elephant's Foot, and Rosie Lee's which she later became owner.  Her award-winning floral work was as beautiful as she was and revered by many.

Katie spent her retirement years in Panama City FL. where she made many friends and touched many lives.  She spent several years as the Resident Commissioner for the Panama City Housing Authority.  Her main goal was to make a difference in the lives of those she encountered and she did so many times over.  She always made everyone she met feel like part of her family.

In her need to make a difference, Katie, among many other things, was a past volunteer for Covenant Hospice and received a Volunteer of the Year Award.  She also volunteered as a Suicide & Crisis Prevention Hotline Operator.  She crocheted baby doll dresses for the Albany Salvation Army Christmas Doll Tree to give to children at Christmastime for several years.  She often baked cookies and muffins for her neighbors.  If she knew of a need she was there.

Katie was a wonderful cook with two of her specialties being chicken and dumplings and pound cake.  She loved fishing the small ponds of South Georgia for bass, catfish and bream.  On Saturdays you could find her cruising for yard sales and shopping the thrift stores.  Reading books was probably one of her most favorite past times and back in the day, she was a member of several different bowling leagues.

Left to treasure Katie's beauty, kindness, sense of humor and quick wit are her sons, Donald Dale of Vincennes, Ind., Joe Dale (Tanya) of Savannah, GA, David Dale of Panama City Beach, FL and her loving daughter Lisa Deriso (Mike) of Panama City, FL, and a daughter in love Jean Martin (Jimmy) of Portsmouth, VA. Her 8 Grand Children, Maggie Mackie (Eric), Clay Dale (Robin), Joe Dale (Whitney), Michelle Martin, Katie Fannin (Wes), Jay Deriso, Candace Brantley (AJ), Michael Dale, 13 Great Grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.  She also leaves behind her very special fur baby Doc who was always her steady companion and protector.

A celebration of life will be held Friday June 24  th  at 2 PM in the Wilson Funeral Home Chapel. The family will receive friends from 1-2 PM Friday prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Katie's honor to the Bay County Humane Society  Make A Donation | Humane Society of Bay County (humanesocietybaycounty.org)
