JUNE AGNES MAPLETOFT
Big floppy hats, movie star sunglasses, muumuus and kaftans epitomized her imaginative flare for fashion and were emblematic of her eccentric lifestyle. June Agnes Mitchell who was born to parents George Leonard Mitchell and Agnes Jean Stephen in Detroit, Michigan on April 25, 1922 died in Panama City, Florida at the age of 86 from her long battle with Alzheimer's disease. She attended Wayne State University receiving a degree in Medical Technology in 1945. She was extremely active in the American Association of University Women (AAUW) where her bookworm mentality served to help others. While at college, she met her husband Dr. Kenneth Mapletoft. Her role as a devout Presbyterian Church Deacon exemplified her passion for religion and thirst for knowledge. Although she was an accomplished tennis player and golfer, it was her love of swimming that gave her the uncanny ability to brave the glacial waters of Lake Huron for long invigorating dips even during the "gloomy June" of Michigan. She collected antiques, scoured garage sales for hidden treasures and loved to play bridge, which she also cursed for being a poor player. She was an incredibly great cook and often fed her culinary experiments to her children. At the age of 50 she admirably found an inner strength that she humbly never fully acknowledged, allowing her to restart a career put on hold to raise her family and to serve as an inspiration to others. She would be tickled knowing that her unyielding genealogic research and her tree of life do not end here. She is survived by her children Kathleen Mapletoft, Maureen Mapletoft, Ross Mapletoft, Megan Cain and grandchildren Kelsey, Ian, Justin and Colin. She may be gone but the essence of her unconditional love, hope and compassion has been left behind in the hearts of those she knew. Mom, turn off the stove and don't forget your "beloved purse!" We'll see you at the cottage. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association Research, 20300 Civic Center Drive, Suite 100, Southfield, Michigan 48076, (248) 996-1046, in memory of June Mapletoft.
