Obituary

June Derentha Adcock McLain, age 97, of Superior Residences, Panama City Beach, FL, went home to her Lord on Monday, June 23, 2025. She was born in 1927 in her grandmother's house in Newton, AL, on her mother's 16th birthday. Her parents were Ralph and Mary Lou Beckham Adcock. From 1933 to 1937 she lived in Brundidge, AL, before moving back to Newton where her father ran the Texaco Service Station and farmed. She attended school in Newton where she lettered in basketball and was a beauty queen. She graduated from Newton High School in 1946. Following graduation she went to Baltimore, MD, and did a summer internship as a flight tester at Glen L. Martin Company (now Lockheed Martin). She attended Huntingdon College in Montgomery AL and Auburn University in Auburn AL. In 1948 she married WWII veteran, George Avery "Mac" McLain in her parent's home in Newton. After college, she and Mac lived in Atlanta, GA, before moving to Panama City, FL, in 1952. From 1956 to 1964, she worked as a Home Service Secretary with the local American Red Cross. During that time she arranged emergency and hardship leaves for many enlisted personnel to come home from far away deployments to be with sick or dying family members or to attend their funerals, and she worked around the clock during all natural disasters. From 1965 until her retirement in 1989 she worked for the Florida State Department of Public Welfare in child welfare and adoption placement. She loved adoption placement. She said "It is certainly rewarding to see beautiful homeless children enter into the warm and loving homes of adoptive parents." She remained in touch with many of those adoptive families throughout her life. In retirement she was a long time (20+ years) volunteer at Gulf Coast Hospital; volunteered at the Domestic Violence Center, was active in her circle at Saint Andrew UMC, was active in both the State's HRS Retirees Group and the Gulf Power Retirees Group and served as the secretary of Gulf Power's group for many years. She and her husband maintained rental property in Panama City and a farm in Newton. To her, family was everything. She was a great communicator creating and sending a much welcomed and greatly coveted annual Christmas newsletter, and personal birthday and greeting cards, letters and emails. As long as she was able she visited and called her loved ones and delighted in every card, visit and phone call she received. She was predeceased by her husband of 62 years. Survivors include her children and spouses: George Avery McLain, Debbie McLain, Martha Nell Snider and Tim Snider; her grandchildren and spouses: Danny McLain, Beverly McLain, Shane Snider, Elizabeth Katz, Melissa Sexton, Charles McLain and Blair McLain; and her great-grandchildren and spouse: Brianna Cotta, Jeremy Cotta, Abbi McLain, Byron McLain, Will Sexton, Ashlyn McLain, EJ Sexton, Avery McLain, Lucas McLain, and Emmie McLain. The family greatly thanks her personal private caregivers: Jennifer Poston, Yvonne Starks, Tammy Stanley and Cheryl Williams; the staff at Superior Residences; and Emerald Coast Hospice for the loving and dedicated care they gave her.
