JOSEPH JOHN LaGRECA

Joseph John LaGreca, 87, beloved father and devoted husband, died Sunday, Sept 3, 2006 at his home. He was born on March 19, 1919, in Bayonne, N.J. and resided in Staten Island, N.Y. for over fifty years. He moved to Lynn Haven 2 1/2 years ago to live with his daughter. Mr LaGreca was preceded in death by his wife, Clara Marie LaGreca. He is survived by his three daughters, Denise Phillips and her husband, Warren, of Lynn Haven, Joanna Haley and her husband, Dan, of San Antonio,Texas and Paulette LaGreca of Staten Island,N.Y.; two adored grandchildren, Kevin Phillips and Jeanette Phillips; four sisters, Mary Bartolo, Jean DeStefano, Theresa Mahoney and Carmela Foley and one brother, John "Red" LaGreca and two sisters-in-law; Blanche LaGreca and Vera LaGreca. He was a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel and St Benedicta parish and a Life Member of the Disabled American Veterans (DAV), Halloran Chapter 34 of Staten Island, N.Y. and Chapter 17 Florida, Panama City.

He was a man, who by his life, set an example. He was born the third of eleven children of immigrant parents. He worked from the age of 11 till retirement at 65 to support his family. His federal civil service career ended at Bayonne Military Ocean Terminal in March of 1984. He married his childhood sweetheart, Clara Marie Cosmas on Aug 30, 1941 and remained faithful in his love and care of her for 63 years. He served as a combat infantryman in World War II and was awarded the Bronze Star and Purple Heart. He facilitated the surrender of a surgeon from the German Army and that doctor later saved his arm as a Prisoner-of-War (POW) with medical techniques that were previously unavailable to American forces. He was a jovial man who loved people and was affectionately known as "Papa Joe" by family and friends. He leaves as his legacy: love of family, industry, humor, patriotism and faith in God.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept 8, 2006, at St. John's the Evangelist Catholic Church with the Rev. George Zieba, CR., officiating. Johnathan Hall, John Haynes, Kevin Phillips, Randy Phillips, Aldo Redaelli and Timothy Sloan will serve as Pall Bearers. Interment will follow in Lynn Haven Cemetery with full military honors. The family will receive friends Thursday, Sept 7, 2006, from 5 to 7 p.m. A rosary service will be held at 7 p.m. Those desiring may make donations to Covenant Hospice, 107 W. 19Th St., Panama City, FL 32405, in memory of Joseph LaGreca.
