JOHN BENJAMIN "JB" YOUNG
MCBM John Benjamin "JB" Young, 83, passed away at home on May 21, 2011. JB was born in Central, Alabama on February 17, 1927. He was the eldest of five children to Orean & Grace Young.
He attended Elmore County High School, Eclectic, AL and in his senior year, 1944, he joined the U.S. Navy and remained there serving as a seaman and diver through WWII, Korea and Vietnam Wars. He retired as Master Chief Boatswain's Mate in August 1975 to Panama City Beach.
He immediately joined the Merchant Marines as a mate with Mar Inc. and served with them until retiring 20 years later in 1995.
He was a dedicated seaman and loved serving his country. He was a lifetime member of the VFW and FRA, where he made many friends that will miss him greatly.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Richard. He is survived by his wife, Jean; two step daughters, Dorothy Fail, of Bay Springs, MS, Gayle Campbell, of Charlotte, NC; step son, Steven Hebner, of Portland, OR; two sisters, Elizabeth Anderson, of Foley, AL, Tina Smith, of Robertsdale, AL; two brothers, Joseph Young, of Foley, AL, Ronald Young, of Bogard, GA. He had many grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews that loved him and will miss him so much.
Honoring his wishes, there will be a memorial service held at 4 p.m. on Saturday, May 28 at the VWF, Panama City Beach. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Covenant Hospice, 107 W 19th Street, Panama City, FL 32405.
