Obituary

John Richard "Dick" Bruhn, MD, passed peacefully in his sleep on August 22nd, 2023 at his Panama City home. He was 88 years old. Dick was born on September 18th,1934, in Jacksonville, FL to John Merle Bruhn and Vera Grund Bruhn. He attended Webb School in Bell Buckle, Tennessee, and Carleton College in Northfield Minnesota. He later graduated from medical school at George Washington University School of Medicine in Washington D.C. He completed his Neurology residency at Stanford University and his Neurosurgery residency at The University of Alabama at Birmingham. As a youth he was a national champion water skier and at one time held the world record for ski-jumping. Dick took up golf and tennis later in life and was a member of the Grand Masters tennis group, as well as, the High Price dogfight. He was an avid sailor racing competitively around the Caribbean and beyond with his sons; as well as, a skilled twin engine pilot flying his Cessna 310 - truly a Renaissance Man. He was a passionate Alabama football fan and was well known for his sense of humor and love of pranks. He served in the US Navy aboard the USS Cambria as a Chief Medical Officer. After his tour in the Navy, he moved back to Birmingham where he spent over 30 years practicing neurosurgery.

Dick was a member of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, the Congress of Neurological Surgeons, the American Medical Association, the Jefferson County Medical Society, the Alabama Medical Society, and the Alabama Neurosurgical Society. He was a longtime member of the Country Club of Birmingham, served on the Board of Directors of Panama City Marine Institute, the St Andrew's Bay Yacht Club and was also a member of the Panama Country Club.
He is survived by his wife of 31 years, Jo Ullman Bruhn of Panama City, his sons Ricky Bruhn(Carolyn), Mitch Bruhn, Katie Patrick (Ben), and Matthew Bruhn. He is also survived by his niece Chris MacDonald Kraabel, PhD. (Tim), 10 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his sister Mary-Ellen MacDonald, and his son Tommy Bruhn.

Funeral services will be held at Holy Nativity Episcopal Church in Panama City FL, on Monday, August 28th, 2023 at 2PM.

A celebration of his life will be held among family and friends in Birmingham AL on Thursday, September 7th. In lieu of flowers the family requests a donation be made to Chautauqua Learn and Serve Charter School in Panama City, FL.
