JOHN ANTHONY GIOIELLO

John Anthony Gioiello died Thursday, January 28, 2010 at Glencove Nursing Home. He was born August 1, 1928, in Birmingham, AL. He graduated in May of 1945 from Minor High School in Birmingham as Co-Valedictorian. He was drafted in 1950 and after basic training at Fort Jackson, SC was assigned to Fort Bliss, TX. He served during the Korean War as an instructor in Basic Electricity and other subjects. After his discharge in 1952, he attended the University of Alabama where he majored in Electrical Engineering. He graduated in 3 ½ years at the top of his class and won the Outstanding Engineering Student Award. He was President of Tau Beta Pi Honor Society and a member of numerous honor societies. He worked at Reynolds Metals at Listerhill, AL, Martin Marietta in Lewisport, KY, Alabama By-Products in Tarrant, AL and at Rust Engineering in Birmingham. He retired in 1993 and has lived in the Panama City area since 1994. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Virginia Sharpe Gioiello; son, John Leslie and wife Sami of Panama City; daughter, Julia of Owensboro, KY; two grandchildren, John A. Gioiello, II of Troy, AL and Virginia Kathryn Gioiello of Birmingham, AL. He attends First Baptist Church of Panama City and is a member of Bob Forbus' Sunday School Class. Funeral services will be held on Monday at 2 p.m. in the Wilson Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Clyde Ellison officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Sunday from 3 – 5 p.m. Active and honorary pallbearers will be members of his Sunday School Class. In lieu of flowers, memorials are requested for the Building Fund at First Baptist Church, P.O. Box 1200, Panama City, FL 32402 or to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, P.O. Box 810, Memphis, TN 38101-9087.
