John Wallace Amick III, age 57, of Panama City, FL went to be with his Lord and Savior on Friday July 27, 2018. He was born Sunday February 19th, 1961 in Pine Bluff, Arkansas to John (Jack) Amick Jr and Martha Jean Davis. John moved to P.C as a young boy. He graduated from A.C. Mosley High School in 1979. John met his future and only wife at the age of 12 and was married to Sonia (Suggs) Amick for 37 years. They shared 45 years of friendship and love with one another. John was a 5th generation fisherman and boat captain. He worked on commercial fishing vessels since he was a teen with his father, uncles and other seasoned captains. At the age of 24 he and Sonia started a commercial fishing seafood company. This started his career as a long time commercial and seafood boat captain being the owner and operator for 33 years. John ran his favorite fishing vessel named after his daughter, the "Lizzy J." with his shipmate "Scouty Dog" for the last 18 years. John was a well known fisherman of the Gulf of Mexico. Known for letting seasoned fisherman as well as green horns on to show them the ropes and give someone a second chance. If someone needed some work he found something for them to do and was willing to go out of his way for those down on their luck. He had a desire to do things the right way and insight on home and where to fish and took time to share that knowledge. For many years he had a part time home in Cameron, Louisiana where the fishing was good. He had a giving nature and being on his boat was an experience to be remembered. John was not only a person of excellence in fishing, but a fantastic cook and loved to cook for and share meals with his crew, often timed making a fancy spread which made you want to come back for more. John was also an avid reader, huge history buff, topics including science, the universe and especially studying God's word. In the 90s, John was recognized as a National Historical fisherman, one who takes care of the sea and knows the way of the historical fishing industry. He was known to others as one of the best commercial snapper and beliner fishermen in the Gulf of Mexico. John later continued his love for the sea when he added a fishing partnership with his son, Justin, which was quite special to him. John was a Christian by faith and attended First Assembly of God in Panama City. He will be remembered for giving above and beyond, being an extremely hard worker, keeping his word, being a very faithful son, loving husband and father, good friend, giving employee, great provider and strong leader. He was a supporter of the NRA, Republican party, wounded warriors, American Cancer Society, Veterans, the elderly, State Troopers, local police and various Christian and youth ministries and organizations. Mr. Amick is preceded in death by his father, Jack and mother, Martha Amick. His is survived by his wife, Sonia Suggs Amick; son, Justin W. Amick; daughter, Elizabeth J. Amick, all of Panama City, FL; sister and brother-in-law, Marcia and Marvin Sawyer of Graceville, FL; sister-in-law, Cyndi and Richard McKinney of Panama City, FL; a special family friend, Ann Lambert; and several boatloads of relatives and beloved friends, aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. John is also survived by his father and mother-in-law, Thomas (Deno) Suggs and Mary Sue Suggs of Panama City, FL, whom he loved as his own. The family will receive friends on Friday August 3, 2018 at Wilson Funeral Home from 5-7 pm. Funeral services will be held on Saturday August 4, 2018 at 1 pm at Wilson Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow at Evergreen Memorial Gardens on Hwy 231. The Reverend Eddie L. Crutchfield along with his wife, Martha will be officiating the service.
