"A Life of Service"

Jessie Johnston passed away peacefully at her daughter Martha's residence on May 15, 2015 in her 94th year. She lived a life of selfless service to her family, her friends, and her church, exemplifying the very essence of a Christian life. She is a rare example of the woman spoken of in Proverbs 31 – "Who can find a virtuous woman? For her price is far above rubies…She openeth her mouth with wisdom and in her tongue is the law of kindness. Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain, but a woman that feareth the Lord, she shall be praised." Among those whose lives she touched, she is a legend, a giant from whom we all draw strength, even in death.

She was devoted to her family, especially to her son Ronald who became a quadriplegic as a teenager due to a diving accident. As a result of his mother's devoted daily care over four decades, he was able to live a full life until his death eight years ago. Family was always at the center of Mamaw's life, and she was loved dearly.

She was born on August 21, 1921 and raised in Milton Florida, and was married to her husband Lee in 1937. She lived in Panama City for all of her adult life and raised her children there. She was widowed at a very early age with Lee's death in 1967. She is also preceded in death by her two sons Robert and Ronald, her parents Marvin and Isabelle Hobbs, her grandson Sergeant Kevin Scott Kight, her son-in-law Bobby Branning, two sisters Ella and Irene, and two brothers Claude and Thomas.

Jessie is survived by her three daughters…..Martha (Dennis) DeLapp of Panama City, Mary Branning of Gulf Breeze, and Marcia Johnston (Philip Bornor) of St. Augustine, also her sister Faye Jones of Milton, five grandchildren Lynn Smith, Michael DeLapp, Robert Branning, Jeremy Branning and Robin Kight, eight great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at Wilson Funeral Home on Tuesday, May 19. Visitation will be at 10 a.m. and services will begin at 11:00 a.m. Interment will follow at Crain Cemetery in Milton, FL.
