Janie Elizabeth Shirley, 97, of Panama City, passed away July 15, 2018. "Tattoo" as she was known by the many children, grandchildren and great grandchildren in her family was truly a kind and gentle soul, a person of simple grace and honesty who asked little and gave much. She was born June 12, 1921 in Atlanta, Georgia. She had been a resident of Panama City since 1952, moving here from Marietta, Georgia. She was a retired LPN, working for Bay Medical and Tyndall Hospital. Following her retirement, she stayed busy: she traveled to Europe and Alaska, she volunteered as a pink lady, took Adult Educational classes at Gulf Coast College and enjoyed playing cards at the Senior Center. She was a charter member of Northside Baptist Church, now known as City Church at Northside. There she was a member of the Golden Age Sunday School Class, she taught Vacation Bible School and Sunday School, sang in the adult choir and worked in the church library. She was preceded in death by her husband, William H. Shirley, Jr.; her parents, Arthur Leroy Mauney and Algie Lee Mauney; and her seven brothers and sisters. She is survived by her two daughters, Ann Giles and Jan Williams (Ash); her son, Butch Shirley; numerous grandchildren; great grandchildren; great great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held on Friday, July 20, at 2 pm at City Church at Northside with Rev. Luther Stanford officiating. The family will receive friends in the church sanctuary from 1 to 2 pm on Friday prior to the service. The family would like to thank the staff of St. Andrews Bay Nursing and Rehabilitation Center and Covenant Care Hospice for caring for her over the past few years.
