James "Jimmy" Matthew Rodgers Sr., 95, of Panama City, passed away on Saturday, September 24, 2016. He was born December 22, 1920 in West Bay, Florida to William Asa & Mamie Lou Rodgers. Jimmy moved with his family from the thriving community of West Bay to Crystal Lake, Florida in 1926. Our Dad's boyhood days were spent roaming the lakes, ponds and woods of North Bay County and South Washington County. He was an avid storyteller, painting beautiful word pictures of his growing up years and many childhood adventures. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was assigned to the Pacific Theater participating in search and rescue and was stationed at Pearl Harbor and Palmyra Atoll. Jimmy was a retired heavy equipment operator with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Our dad was a faithful charter member of Cove Baptist Church where he served as a Sunday School teacher, usher, deacon and trustee. He is survived by his devoted wife of 68 years, Mildred Bell Rodgers; son, James Matthew Rodgers Jr. (Deborah); daughter, Debbie Rodgers-Green; 4 grandchildren, Suzanah Raffield, Brian Cooper, Matthew Rodgers, Kimberly Rodgers; 2 great grandchildren, Haleigh Howell, Henry Raffield; brother, Wilburn Rodgers, sister, Eleanor Henrichs and numerous precious nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday at 2 p.m. in the Cove Baptist Church with Rev. Suzanah Raffield officiating. Interment will follow in the Greenwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the Wilson Funeral Home on Tuesday from 5-7 p.m. Active pallbearers are Jim Murfee, Bubba Faile, Danny Raffield, D.W. Bell, Kevin Kent and W.A. Ray. Honorary pallbearers are Larry Bell, Jack Bell, Ewell Mauldin, Doug Bell, Perry Bell, Brody Baker, Ben Baker, Griff Griffitts, Matt Griffitts, Jay McKeever, Raymond McKeever, Stosh Arnold, David Green and Rodney Edwards. Those desiring may make memorial donations to your favorite charity in memory of Jimmy Rodgers. Every day was a good day to Jimmy, always ready with a smile and a kind word. Strong in faith and love of family, he was a simply wonderful man.
