JAMES ALLEN MAPLES
(1912 - 2008)
James Allen Maples, the 2nd oldest of 11 children, died in his sleep Tuesday morning 3 days short of his 96th birthday. He was born on Dec. 5, 1912 in Southern Pines N.C. to Walter Raleigh Maples and Lucy Ann Wicker Maples. He eventually married Evelyn Regan and moved to Lumberton N.C., Washington D.C. and then Miami. He moved to Panama City in 1980 and went to work as a security guard at Pinnacle Port where the residents became so fond of him they requested that he remain as long as his health would allow.
He owned and operated the Willis Jeep dealership in Lumberton N.C.
He loved old cars and had quite a collection of delightful model antiques.
He was awarded the title: Master of the Royal Secret for achieving 32° in the Masonic order.
He loved his dog chica- his beloved companion who was by his side when he went peacefully in his sleep.
He was preceded in death by his wife, mother, father, daughter Jane Allen Maples, granddaughter, Melissa Smith Bennett and all of his siblings except baby sister Pauline.
He is survived by his daughter Mary Ann Maples Smith and husband, Dr. Tim Smith of Panama City; grandchildren are Tim Smith II and Stephen Smith who reside in Panama City. The great-grandchildren are Gabriel, Daniel, Kendall and Michele Bennett; Tim Smith III and Tanner Morgan Smith of Panama City. He is also survived by his son Bobby Maples and wife, Ann and their children, Barbara, Linda, James, Brenda and Joseph Maples all from North Carolina and by his sister Polly Waddington of Fayetteville, N.C.
He had three grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren and one big heart for them all. God blessed him with two wonderful friends, Sharon Jordan and Johnny Peters.
Plus, there are no words to describe Dr. Tim Smith's unwavering support, daily visits, and many late nights. Tim was his doctor, beloved son in law and most of all- his friend. Pop-pop will be missed by all of us.
