IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Irma Elizabeth
Simpson
October 6, 1932 – November 12, 2019
Irma Elizabeth (Johnson) Simpson, age 87 of Panama City, Florida, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, November 12, 2019 in Fort Walton Beach, Florida. Irma was known to her family as Mama, Mom, Grandma Turkey, and Meme. Born in Panama City Beach, Florida on October 6, 1932, she was the daughter of Edith Hortense (Hinson) Johnson and her husband, Robert Johnson. She was baptized at First Baptist Church, downtown Panama City at the age of 8. Irma was a Polio survivor, spending one year of her early life away from family and friends in Pensacola, Florida to recover. She received her early education at Panama City Grammar School and Bay High School, attended business school in Florida, and attained a nursing degree at the age of 38 in Saint Charles, Missouri.
Irma remained in Panama City until she met the love of her life and husband, Howard Eugene "Gene" Simpson, and their adventures with the United States Air Force began. Together, Irma and Gene traveled the United States and abroad during their military career. Upon returning to Panama City to settle their family, Irma and Gene were entrepreneurs and owned and operated several successful businesses. Irma loved people, children, and babies and she raised up more kids than her own – "there's always room for one more", she'd say. Irma enjoyed and displayed talent in crafting, sewing, crocheting, creating jewelry, learning about and manipulating rocks & minerals, tending to plants, fresh air, and loving on her dogs through the years.
Irma had a zest for life, was quick-witted and mischievous, adventurous, full of joy and had an infectious laugh. She leaves a lasting impression of a strong will to live and scheming for the next adventure.
Irma was preceded in death by her husband Gene of 49 years, parents Edith & Robert Johnson, brother Robert Gillis Johnson, and one son, William Gregory. She is survived by her sister Judith Day (Doug); her children Paula Davis (John), Howard Simpson, Patti Jenkins (Rick), and Pamela Turley (Donald); her nephew Michael Johnson (Cathy); her grandchildren Sean (Laurel), Todd, Jennifer (Matthew), Patrick, Sabrina (DJ), April, Dalton, Ryan, Brennan, Alex, Madelynne, Savannah, and Joshua; ten great grandchildren; and multiple nieces and nephews.
