IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Howard Gene
Givens
June 21, 1944 – April 14, 2022
Howard Gene Givens, 77, passed away on Thursday, April 14, 2022, surrounded by his family. A man who never met a stranger or failed to offer a helping hand, Gene was first and foremost a loving husband and father. He and his beautiful wife, Brenda, were married for nearly 47 years. The consummate family man, Gene never missed his children's school and sporting events, dance recitals, or birthday parties. He coached soccer and baseball teams, supervised camping trips, and spent countless summer days pulling his children and their friends around North Bay on tubes and kneeboards behind their boat. Gene especially adored his grandchildren, cherishing every opportunity to participate in their lives and celebrate their milestones.
Gene was born on June 21, 1944, in McCrory, Arkansas. After serving as a Sergeant in the United States Air Force, Gene had a long career as a branch manager for Air Products and Chemicals. When he was in good health, he enjoyed golf, tennis, fishing, and traveling around the United States, seeing natural wonders and visiting family and friends. A born storyteller, he loved to recount memories of his childhood, days in the service, and family life.
A resident of Panama City since 1981, Gene was an active member of the community and friend to all he met. He was particularly involved in the Oakland Terrace Men's Club, serving as president for multiple terms. He regularly volunteered at the Club's concession stand, supporting youth sports and raising funds for community projects. He recruited sons Chad and Austin at an early age to continue his Men's Club legacy alongside his dear friend, Jerome Moore, with whom he shared weekly lunches and good conversation for 22 years.
Gene was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Halleck Givens, and his daughter, Valarie Jill Givens. He is survived by his wife, Brenda Givens; five children: Michel Givens, Bradley Givens (Jennifer), Chad Givens, Kimberly Graham (Matthew), and Austin Givens; six grandchildren: Abigail Givens, Kolbie Graham, Finley Graham, Logan Ferren (Alex), Caleb Ferren (Madeleine), and Hallie Watson; six great grandchildren; siblings: Richard Givens, Roger Givens, and Pamela Wiggs; and many beloved extended family members.
