Henning G. Anderson, 98, passed away Thursday, Nov. 24, 2016.
He was born Jan 5, 1918, in South Salem, NY, to Henry G. and Edith J. Anderson. He is the last of his generation, preceded in death by his parents, loving wife Dorothy; his brothers: Nils, Robert and Norman and daughter Gail Shortell. He is survived by his children, Craig Anderson and Ruthe Martin (John); grandchildren, Laura Landolt (Michael), Matthew Shortell, Andrea Richardson (Colin), Victoria Zidwick (Mark); great grandchildren, Abigail, Lucy, Mark, John and Peter.
In 1943 he was commissioned second lieutenant in the Army Air Corps reserves and served as an instructor pilot and pilot of B-24's in the American theater of World War II. In 1951, he was recalled to active duty and flew T-6 aircraft in the Korean War where he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for bravery and heroism. Later, he flew a variety of aircraft and commanded numerous units retiring from the USAF reserves in 1973 as a colonel.
When not serving in the reserves, he worked at Western Electric Company in New York for more than thirty years.
He was a long-time Mason and life-time member of the Telephone Pioneers of America. He was a member of the "Mosquitos" Association (Korean Veterans) holding numerous office positions. He was a member of the only American Legion Aviator's post.
Prior to moving to Lynn Haven, he was a resident of Glen Head, NY. He knew every road and town on Long Island. He was a faithful member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church where a memorial service will be held December 12 at noon. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to Our Savior's Lutheran Church, 16 Glenwood Rd, Glen Head, NY 11545.
