HAZEL McCLELLAN POPE

Hazel Lavaughn McClellan Pope passed away peacefully on October 6th, 2011 at the age of 86. Mrs. Pope spent most of her life in Panama City, FL and, most recently, resided in Pensacola, FL. Hazel is preceded in death by her parents, John Roy McClellan and Sallie Green McClellan; her sister, Inez McClellan Jones, and the love of her life, Lucius Ballenger Pope, Jr. Mr. & Mrs. Pope were married in April of 1982 and celebrated 20 loving years of marriage before his death in 2002.
Mrs. Pope is survived by her son, Jimmy L. Sherouse and wife Patty, of Pensacola, FL; her brother John Douglas (Pete) McClellan of Ponte Vedra Beach, FL; her granddaughter, Nikki Sherouse-Smith and husband Kent, of Kailua, HI; two grandsons, Chris Sherouse and wife Tracy and Wes Sherouse and wife Amber, all of Cantonment, FL; two great-granddaughters, Mia Smith of Kailua, HI and Abigail Sherouse of Cantonment, FL; and 8 nieces and nephews.
Born on September 15, 1925 in Chattahoochee, FL, Hazel graduated from Chattahoochee High School and spent over 40 years working at Southern Bell in Panama City, FL. In her spare time, she enjoyed fresh water fishing, playing bingo and spending time at her riverside home in Sneads, FL, with her beloved husband, Lucius.
Hazel's son and grandchildren will treasure the memories of their mother & grandmother watching her beloved Atlanta Braves play baseball on television, taking long walks to Lake Caroline in Panama City, her delicious suppers and her red velvet cake. Hazel will be remembered fondly and missed dearly by her family and her friends.
The family extends its deepest gratitude for the care and support given to Miss Hazel by the staffs at Grandview Retirement Center, West Florida Hospital, Covenant Hospice and Specialty Care Skilled Nurses and to the countless dear friends and co-workers who have faithfully been by her side and who have lifted her up during these last few years.
Pallbearers for Mrs. Pope are Ray Davis, Larry P. Salares, Ike Breedon, Greg Mikula.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday in the Wilson Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow at Greenwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Saturday from 12 noon – 1 p.m. prior to the service.
