After completing the two-year medical school program at the Univ. of Missouri, Columbia, MO, Dr. Alfred transferred to the University of Tennessee to complete his degree. Following graduation, he became a physician in the United States Army Air Corps (which, in 1947, became the U.S. Air Force) and he served his country in that capacity for 23 years, retiring in 1966. He had the distinction of serving in the Army, Navy and Air Force. His service included duty in foreign lands, including the Philippine Islands.

As a Board-Certified Radiologist, upon his retirement from the Air Force in 1966, he accepted a position with Bay Radiology. His practice included radiological duties at Bay Medical Center and Gulf Coast Medical Center, as well as at the outlying hospitals served by Bay Radiology. Dr. Alfred was one of the founding physicians at Gulf Coast Medical Center. In 1985, he retired a second time from Bay Radiology and devoted his time to his family and friends and applying his keen intellect to analyzing governmental conduct of affairs.

He retained his current membership in the North American Radiological Society, and in the University Of Missouri Alumni Association. Last fall he traveled to his 61st Class Reunion, in Columbia, during which he watched from a skybox as his "Old Mizzou" team triumphed at the last minute over the visitors from Iowa State! Having grown up in Kansas City, Missouri, he retained his affection to the end for the "Show-Me" state. He was also an active member of the St. Andrew Bay Yacht Club.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and by his beloved wife of 48 years, Mary Lou McSwine Alfred who he met and married while he was a medical student in 1944, she loyally accompanied him in his duties and travels around the world.
