Obituary

GOVERNOR "GOV" EDWARD WEBB

Governor "Gov" Edward Webb, 80, of Lynn Haven, died Saturday, October 24, 2009 in a local hospital. He was born November 27, 1928 in Homerville, Georgia and was raised in Baker, Florida. He graduated from FSU in 1952. He was a Captain in the U.S. Marine Corps. He taught Math in Bonifay, and moved to Panama City around 1960 and began his entrepreneur years. He acquired land in Hiland Park and began raising hogs. At the same time, he obtained a contract from Navy Defense Lab for waste removal and landscaping and TAFB for waste removal. He began using the food waste to feed the hogs and perfecting a system of steam pressure using centrifugal force to separate the glass, also having a system for medicinal waste. Visitors came from as far as China to view his operation.
He established his own sanitation company, Argus Services, Inc. which first operated locally but soon spread to surrounding counties. Due to his extreme drive and work ethics, Argus became the largest independent waste company in his area.
In 1993, he "retired" and bought farm land in Chipley. Having been raised on a farm, he wanted to renew his love of farming. Raising hogs and growing "the finest sweet corn around" proved to be not enough for the hard working man. He and his wife, Gail, owned and operated "The Governor's Place Boer Goats," for 10 years having to discontinue early in 2009 because of Gov's illness. They were ably assisted by Harry and Eunice Shipes and on their death, Mike and Joyce Shipes stepped in. They won many ribbons and trophies, always aspiring to have a Grand National Champion, the Boer Goats were numbered, but Gail gave each one a name. There will be a goat named "Governor" in the next competition so who knows? His passion was FSU football, enthusing his children with the same passion.
He enjoyed many trips to Colombia, El Salvador and Argentina for dove shooting and was well known for his Hiland Park and later Chipley dove shoots. He was a member of the Econfina Men's Club and the Eddie Spradley Sunday School Class of Hiland Park Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Gail Boggs Webb; three children, Heather Webb and her children, Matt Webb Middleton and Sunshine Webb, of Sterling, Virginia; Matt Webb and wife, Tracee and their daughter, Jessica Webb, of Crestview, Florida; Hal Webb and wife, Jennifer and step son, Jacob Justice, of Port St. Joe; step children, Esther Rainey and husband, Andy and their children, Will Rainey, Matt Rainey, Elizabeth Gail Rainey, of LaGrange, Georgia, John Smyth and wife, Leigh Ann, and their children, Mary Katherine Smyth and Hunter Smyth, of Birmingham, Alabama, Greg Smyth of Birmingham, Alabama; father & mother-in-law; Harry & Esther "K.D."
