IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Glenda Gainer
Fussell
January 6, 1947 – May 20, 2021
Glenda Gainer Fussell, age 74, left this life on May 20, 2021. A valiant warrior in this fight against cancer, she fought for every breath until they came no more. Born and raised in Panama City to Odeal Carter and Robert G. Gainer, on January 6, 1947, she was the third of three children.
She is survived by her beloved husband of 54 years, William Collins Fussell, her son, Derek Collins Fussell, his wife, Karla Fussell, daughter Alison Fussell Latham, four grandchildren, Laura Katherine Fussell, Christopher Collins Fussell, Jacob Howard Latham and Natalie Hannah Latham. Also succeeding her are her mother Odeal Gainer, her sister Ann Zediker, her husband Jim Zediker, sister-in-law, Betsy Shepherd, her husband Mike Shepherd and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death were her father, Robert G. Gainer, brother, Gerald Gainer, mother-in-law, Ava Fussell and father-in-law, Bill Fussell.
Glenda was part of the first graduating class of Rutherford High School in 1964. She graduated from Florida State in 1968 with a degree in Library Science. She was a professional educator in Bay County for 29 years. She had taught 2 nd grade at Parker Elementary, middle school math at Mowat Junior High, high school math at Rutherford, before becoming Media Specialist at her Alma Mater, Rutherford. As a Media Specialist, she became known internationally for developing the workshop course used by International Baccalaureate to prepare Media Specialists for working in IB schools.
When cancer took her voice 17 years ago, she communicated so that you knew what she was thinking, even if it was just a beautiful smile. She was a woman of many talents – expert seamstress, accomplished gardener, and excellent cook. One of her many loves were her chickens. She could train them to do just about anything and enjoyed spending many hours in their company.
Glenda was truly a woman for others. Even while sick from chemo and radiation or recovering from a surgery, she was concerned about the welfare of others. She was constantly making gifts for people she knew and people she didn't know. Her first words upon seeing you, no matter her condition, were always "How are you doing?" Her beautiful smile lit up any room and her generosity was beyond measure.
A celebration of her life will be held on July 10 th at 10 am, at Wilson's Funeral Home. Instead of flowers, donations may be made to her favorite charity, created by her son in her honor, Camo Dreams, Inc. This charity provides dream outdoor hunting and fishing trips for children with disabilities or illnesses, camodreamsinc.org.
